Introduction to Our Program's Philosophy

Gia Isabel Pak Dec 19, 2019

1. Our Mission
We strive to empower students of diverse backgrounds to speak for change.

2. Our Vision
We are not strictly a merit-based program. Instead, we strive to create equitable opportunities for all students in order to
foster personal growth, develop leadership qualities, and gain a global perspective.

3. Our Goals
Our end goal for this project is to create an equitable opportunity for future leaders and scholars of Pontiac High School,
while at the same time, demonstrate the need for mental health awareness in the community. We hope that through this
program, we can demonstrate how Pontiac students have the potential to rise and succeed, no matter what barriers impede
their goals.

Pontiac Speaks Coach Pro le

Gia Isabel Pak Dec 19, 2019 (Edited Dec 19, 2019)

As we have stated in our philosophy, we aim to to create an equitable opportunity for future leaders and scholars of Pontiac
High School, while at the same time, demonstrate the need for mental health awareness in the community.
In order to accomplish such tasks, this program requires mentor figures who are patient, competent, and most importantly,
empathetic towards the youth.
In this part of the module, we will be exploring the ideal profile of a Pontiac Speaks Coach who's practices align well with
this program's philosophy.

As a Pontiac Speaks Coach, we strive to help Pontiac students develop their stories so that they will first recognize their
value, next they will share their common humanity with others, and finally they will strive to help create a more peaceful
world.
If we want Pontiac students to achieve these three quintessential mindsets, it is important for Pontiac Speaks Coaches to
strive to be:

1. Thinkers: We use creative and critical thinking skills in order to analyze, then take responsible action on complex
problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.

2. Communicators: We express ourselves confidently and creatively. We collaborate effectively, and we are able to listen
carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.

3. Principled: We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity
and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.

4. Open-Minded: We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of
others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.

5. Caring: We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive
difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.

6. Balanced: We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives-- intellectual, physical, and
emotional-- to achieve well-being for ourselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with
the world in which we live.

7. Reflective: We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths
and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.
