Expansion

Q. What do expansion and contraction mean?

Ans: Expansion and contraction. Substances expand (increase in size) when they get
warmer, and they contract (decrease in size) when they get cooler.
Q. Explain the laws behind expansion and contraction using molecular arrangement and
intermolecular space between atoms.
ANS) Whenever a metal is heated up, it expands. The intermolecular space increases
as the molecular arrangement of the metal changes to have a bigger form. When the
heated metal cools down, it contracts. The intermolecular space decreases as the
molecular arrangement of the metal again changes to has a smaller or original form.
