Welcome/Theme of the Day God Breathes Hope and Resurrection Life in and around Us

This is the day the Lord has made! Christ is risen, and through him all creation is made new! In this time of world-wide crisis,
congregations throughout the church are not able to gather for worship as the body of Christ. While we cannot be together
in person, we can hear the word of God and hold each other in prayer. With the women at the tomb, we are astonished,
elated, and grateful. With joy we proclaim the good news of God’s endless and life-resurrecting love. May you be
transformed by the Resurrection of our Lord.

Easter Acclamation

Christ is risen!
Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!

This Easter celebration is not like ones we’ve known.

We pray in isolation, we sing the hymns alone.
We’re distant from our neighbors — from worship leaders, too.
No flowers grace the chancel to set a festive mood.

No gathered choirs are singing; no banners lead the way.

O God of love and promise, where’s joy this Easter Day?
With sanctuaries empty, may homes become the place
we ponder resurrection and celebrate your grace.

Our joy won’t come from worship that’s in a crowded room

but from the news of women who saw the empty tomb.
Our joy comes from disciples who ran with haste to see —
who heard that Christ is risen, and then, by grace, believed.

In all the grief and suffering, may we remember well:

Christ suffered crucifixion and faced the powers of hell.
Each Easter bears the promise: Christ rose that glorious day!
Now nothing in creation can keep your love away.

We thank you that on Easter, your church is blessed to be

a scattered, faithful body that’s doing ministry.
In homes and in the places of help and healing, too,
we live the Easter message by gladly serving you.

Praise God for the good news of Easter! Christ is risen!

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray together. God of hope and new life, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead,
for he is alive and is the Lord of life. Increase in our hearts and minds the risen life we share
with Christ. Help us to grow as your people toward the fullness of eternal life with you,
through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

First Reading A Reading from Acts 10:34–43. CEV Bible
Here is Peter’s sermon, delivered at the home of Cornelius, a Roman army officer, which sums up the essential message of Christianity. Everyone
who believes in Jesus, whose life, death, and resurrection fulfilled the words of the prophets, receives forgiveness of sins through his name.

Peter said: “Now I am certain that God treats all people alike. God is pleased with everyone who worships
him and does right, no matter what nation they come from. This is the same message that God gave to the
people of Israel, when he sent Jesus Christ, the Lord of all, to offer peace to them.

You surely know what happened everywhere in Judea. It all began in Galilee after John had told everyone
to be baptized. God gave the Holy Spirit and power to Jesus from Nazareth. He was with Jesus, as he went
around doing good and healing everyone who was under the power of the devil. We all saw what Jesus did
both in Israel and in the city of Jerusalem.

Jesus was put to death on a cross. But three days later, God raised him to life and let him be seen. Not
everyone saw him. He was seen only by us, who ate and drank with him after he was raised from death. We
were the ones God chose to tell others about him.

God told us to announce clearly to the people that Jesus is the one he has chosen to judge the living and the
dead. Every one of the prophets has said that all who have faith in Jesus will have their sins forgiven in his
name.
Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God!

Gospel The good news from Matthew 28:1-10. CEV Bible

Sorrow gives way to “fear and great joy” when two women are sent by an angel to proclaim the good news: Jesus is risen!

The Sabbath was over, and it was almost daybreak on Sunday when Mary Magdalene and the other Mary
went to see the tomb. Suddenly a strong earthquake struck, and the Lord’s angel came down from heaven. He
rolled away the stone and sat on it. The angel looked as bright as lightning, and his clothes were white as
snow. The guards shook from fear and fell down, as though they were dead.

The angel said to the women, “Don’t be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, who was nailed to a cross.
He isn’t here! God has raised him to life, just as Jesus said he would. Come, see the place where his body was
lying. Now hurry! Tell his disciples that he has been raised to life and is on his way to Galilee. Go there, and
you will see him. That is what I came to tell you.”

The women were frightened and yet very happy, as they hurried from the tomb and ran to tell his disciples.
Suddenly Jesus met them and greeted them. They went near him, held on to his feet, and worshiped him. Then
Jesus said, “Don’t be afraid! Tell my followers to go to Galilee. They will see me there.”

This is the Good News! Thanks be to God! Hallelujah!

Nicene Creed

Let us affirm our faith with the whole church using the Nicene Creed.

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

Prayers of the People

Children of God: on this Easter Day marked by both sorrow and joy, our prayers for the church, the
world, and all in need include both heartfelt lament and fervent praise. We lament that we cannot gather
today for public worship, that death hovers around us, and our sorrows and fears blunt our songs of
Alleluia. And yet around the globe we praise you for the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave,
for our baptismal washing in his life, for your presence in your word, and for the hope the gospel brings.
God of resurrection, fill us with new life and hope.

God our Creator, we lament that our lifestyles have harmed your creation and that our efforts to repair
your earth are now postponed. And yet we praise you for the beauty of the natural world, for springtime
flowers and budding trees, for the soil and rain that nourish the crops and for the birth of a baby girl to
Lauren and Casey Litchfield, grandparents Jim and Diane McMenamin. God of resurrection, fill us with
new life and hope.

God our Ruler, we lament that war and violence still rage, that countless people suffer injustice, that the
plight of those in need seems beyond solution. And yet we praise you that there is peace on our streets,
that aid agencies are devoting themselves to sharing our resources, and that we are given connections to
friends and family through technology. God of resurrection, fill us with new life and hope.

God our Physician, we lament all who suffer, those we name here before you especially all who mourn
their dead especially the family and friends of Doug Campbell and Mike Greene; all who have
contracted the virus; those who are quarantined or stranded away from home; those who have lost their
employment; those who fear the present and the future. We lament the coronavirus and its incalculable
suffering, the many thousands sick, the fear instilled, the loss of employment, the cancelation of plans,
graduating seniors who will not get to experience the celebration of a milestone achievement, the closing of
schools, the overflow in hospitals, the scarcity of supplies, the exhaustion of medical staff. And yet we
praise you for health and well-being wherever it thrives, for the dedication of medical workers, for the
goodwill of volunteers, for the generosity of benefactors, the servant hearts of mask and skull cap makers
of Holy Spirit and for the comfort we receive from the power of the resurrection. Support physicians,
nurses, and home health aides; medical researchers; frontline workers especially Dr. Jennifer, Bethann,
Eric and Theresa, Lauren, Dean, Becky, Faye, Edna, Joel, Joyce, Heather, Anne and Jim, Jolene, Dr. David
and Sherri, Emily, Sarah and Phil, Chip, Nate, Heather, Nathan and Jocelyn, George, Marty, Victoria,
Shannon, Dr. Mathai and Dr. Elizabeth, Dr. Sue and Dr. Jeff, Erin, Dr. Chuck, Dr. Tony, Taylor, Deepti and
Vikam, Jenna, Elizabeth and Frontline employees at hospitals, grocers, teachers and students, residents in
Nursing Homes, Senior Residences, Special Needs Residences, pregnant women. Yet, faithful God, you
accompany suffering humanity with love. Abide wherever the coronavirus has struck. God of resurrection,
fill us with new life and hope.

 God our Healer, you care for all in need. We beg you to feed the hungry, protect the refugee, embrace
the distressed, house the homeless, comfort the dying and nurse the sick, especially our shut in/homebound

joyous life in your presence, when disease and sorrow will be no more. In life and death we praise you:

God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you are the Source of life, Word of salvation, and Power of mercy.
With bold confidence in your love, almighty God, we place all for whom we pray into your eternal care;
through Christ our risen Lord. Amen.
