that anonymity, while the government
says it attracts criminals.
To use crypto, individuals have a
public key and a private key for their
wallets. The public key is akin to your
bank account number so people know
where to send or receive their crypto
payments. The private key is like your
bank account’s PIN, used to verify your
identity for the transaction. Like a PIN,
you should never share your private
key.
Hot wallets are always connected to
the internet and cryptocurrency net-
work, which makes them easy to ac-
cess. People can quickly send and re-
ceive crypto, anytime and anywhere.
That makes a hot wallet ideal for ev-
eryday use.
That connectivity also is a hot wal-
let’s major drawback, making it sus-
ceptible to hackers and thieves since
public and private keys are stored on-
line. Like with all online accounts,
some of that risk can be mitigated with
strong passwords and two-factor au-
thentication.
In contrast, cold wallets are stored
offline, like on a thumb drive. By keep-
ing your private keys off the internet,
cold wallets are protected against
hacking attempts. To access crypto in
a cold wallet, you must connect your
device to the internet which makes it
safer, but more cumbersome to use for
everyday purchases.
“Think of them as checking and
savings accounts, with the hot wallet
being like the checking account and
the cold wallet like your savings ac-
count,” said Ric Edelman, founder of
Digital Assets Council of Financial
Professionals and author of a new
book The Truth About Crypto.
Anyone who owns or has ever
owned cryptocurrency has a hot wallet
because a hot wallet is needed to ac-
cept digital assets.
From there, whether you need or
want a cold wallet depends on how
much cryptocurrency you have and
what you want to do with those assets.
If you’re dealing only with small
amounts that you spend or trade reg-
ularly, maybe a hot wallet is all you
need for those quick transactions.
If you get hacked and are a victim of
cybertheft, you may not lose much
more than what you might lose if you
lost a wallet with cash in it.
However, if you plan to buy digital
assets as investments or plan to hold
large amounts, you probably want to
get cold wallet storage to keep them
safe. You can use a third party to put
your assets in a cold wallet or you can
download your coins onto a drive of
your own and keep it safe.
Just remember, DIY’ing it will re-
quire you to remember your private
key, lest you end up like Stefan Thom-
as, a programmer in San Francisco
who forgot his private key and forev-
er lost about a quarter of a million dol-
lars.
Using a third party, such as Coin-
base, to lock up your cold wallet trans-
fers the responsibility for your private
key to the company, Edelman said. But
beware of the saying “not your keys,
not your coins.” If a third-party takes
care of your storage, they own your
keys, which could leave you hanging
dry if the company, for example, goes
bankrupt.

media – it’s spreading like a virus now.”
Livestreaming has become a power-
ful tool for would-be terrorists, said
Emerson Brooking, resident fellow at
the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic
Research Lab and co-author of “Like-
War: The Weaponization of Social
Media.”
“They create a contemporaneous
record of atrocity,” he said. “Livestreams
enable lone wolf terrorists to publicize
their attacks without the need for ac-
complices. Terrorists seek publicity so
that they can become famous and in-
spire other copycat attacks in turn.”
That tool has only become more pow-
erful as its reach grows. Livestreaming
has become “an integral part of modern
digital life,” Brooking said in an email.

ball game, you can get it through Uber
Eats.
Ride-hailing company Uber an-
nounced Monday that it would offer
Uber Eats at Stadiums so fans can or-
der food without having to wait in lines
at concession stands.

closest concession stands and wait

Once an order is ready, users can
just walk up to the concession stand
and pick it up.
The service will be available at the
following locations, with plans to ex-

year found that board membership of
the nation’s largest and most valuable
companies did not reflect the demo-
graphics of their workforces, let alone
the nation’s overall population. While
white men make up about a third of
U.S. workers, they held half or more of
board seats, USA TODAY found.
California’s board diversity law suc-
ceeded where voluntary measures
foundered or failed, said Intintoli, who
researched the effects of the law.
The “binding nature” of the Califor-
nia law – the threat of hefty fines for
not complying – “seemed to be effec-
tive in encouraging these appoint-
ments,” he said.
Judge rules board diversity law
is unconstitutional
A Los Angeles judge ruled Friday
that a California law requiring compa-
nies in the state to add female direc-
tors to their boards is unconstitutional
because it violated the equal protec-
tion clause of the state’s constitution.
It was the second setback for the
state’s groundbreaking laws that man-
dated – and got – more diversity on
corporate boards.
The state argued the law was need-
ed to combat discrimination and didn’t
set quotas because boards could add
seats for women without removing
men from their positions.

quicker tools to flag hate and violence,
said Brooking, who noted that “firearms
were clearly visible in the video for sev-
eral minutes before the attack began.”
He also condemned Discord as a
staging ground for the Buffalo shooter,
who kept a “to do” list that included his
statement in a private channel. The Buf-
falo shooter mirrored the attack on his

sIQ, which analyzed changes in the
board composition of 70 companies. At
those companies, women secured near-
ly 100 new board seats since 2016, up
nearly 12%.
Women now hold 239 board seats
among these companies, which repre-
sents nearly a third of the total seats, Di-
versIQ said. California-based S&P 500
companies that have notably increased
the number of women on their boards
include Walt Disney, Intel, Ross Stores
and eBay.
The California law passed in 2018 re-
quired that publicly traded companies
headquartered in the state have at least
two or three women on their boards or
face hefty fines.
It was opposed by more than two
dozen business groups, including the
California Chamber of Commerce,
which argued the gender quotas were
“likely unconstitutional.”
Even then-Gov. Jerry Brown was hes-
itant to sign the bill, citing legal con-
cerns, but did so anyway as the Me Too
movement raged.
Another Los Angeles judge issued a
similar ruling last month, striking down
a law that required that public compa-
nies in California add at least one direc-

cord said hate and violence have no
place on their platform.
“We are doing everything we can to

Twitch has an added responsibility
because, unlike Facebook, its core prod-
uct is livestreaming, according to Syra-
cuse University associate professor
Jennifer Grygiel, who studies social
media.
“Twitch needs to invest and improve
its systems to try to prevent its platform
from being used to commit violent acts,”
they said. “Society does not need to ac-
cept livestreamed massacres and the
myth that nothing can be done to pre-
vent it.”
Tech giants that host livestreaming
told USA TODAY they were working dili-
gently to keep live violence off users’
screens.
In a statement emailed Monday to
USA TODAY, Twitter said it was working
to “proactively identify and take action

ny will launch an EV Hub for drivers to
learn more about going electric, such as
comparing the cost of owning an EV
with the cost of driving a non-electric
vehicle. Uber will also add a charging
map for drivers to easily find charging
stations.

Judicial Watch opposed
boardroom diversity laws
Conservative group Judicial Watch
challenged both California laws in court,
arguing they forced companies to dis-
criminate based on gender and race. Ju-
dicial Watch did not respond to requests

The state laws, the first of their kind
in the country, played a key role in in-
creasing pressure on corporate boards
to diversify.
In August, Nasdaq instituted a new
policy requiring most of the nearly
3,000 companies listed on the stock ex-
change to have at least one woman on
their board of directors and one person
from a racial minority or who identifies
as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or
queer. The Securities and Exchange
Commission is facing a lawsuit over its
approval of the Nasdaq rule.

moved” content filmed by the gunman,
and was “prominently surfacing videos
from authoritative sources in search
and recommendations,” the platform in
a statement.
