SPRINGS
SPRING SET
Prior to its first compression the ‘free height’ of a spring
may be longer than its specified height. This is
common during spring manufacture and can be
compensated for in two ways.
A spring can be built with a ‘free length’ which has an
allowance for set. This involves compensating for the
length loss when a spring is fully compressed for the
first time. Another method is known as ‘removing the
set’, or ‘presetting’ which may be undertaken during
manufacturing to ensure that the spring is at the correct
free height for use. The process is carried out by
simply compressing a spring to its solid height. A ‘set’
spring will have a new free length that is stable and
consistent through future compression cycles.
