Bali
This small Indonesian island is a cultural hub surrounded by nature. Bali is a haven for anyone interested in
geography, conservation, culture and adventure. Nestled between forests and streams are villages, rice
fields and temples, making the Bali landscape both exotic and diverse. It is therefore a fantastic place to
bring students as there is a wealth of flora, fauna and culture to be explored. Students can experience the
hospitable and laid-back Hindu culture and explore the diversity of the landscape through our specially
designed programme with local insight.
Get an authentic taste of Bali with a walk through a traditional Balinese village, discovering their unique
architecture and daily village activities. Students have an opportunity to experience the local hand
weaving cooperative, learning the different techniques of weaving from local weavers. After a traditional
Balinese lunch, with some dishes prepared by the students themselves, students can try their hand at rice
cultivation. Rice is the world’s third largest produced grain and a vital crop grown in Bali. Students help
plough the padi fields & plant rice seedlings, giving them a first-hand appreciation of how difficult rice
cultivation can be.
BATIK
Batik has played an integral role in Indonesian culture and even made it to the UNESCO Intangible Heritage
list in 2009. Originally made by drawing wax dots or lines with a spouted tool on cloth, the wax resists dyes
and therefore allows the artist to colour selectively by soaking the cloth. During this activity, students will get
a tour around the workshop and see the whole process in action! Afterwards students can select their own
design and colour scheme, printing their design using a copper block and wax.
Students will have an introduction into the Balinese philosophy Three Hita Karana (the relationships between
people, nature and gods) and learn how to prepare the daily offerings and decorations commonly used in
Balinese culture.
This is more suited to older students wanting to immerse themselves in Balinese culture. After being dressed in
traditional sarongs representing the Tri Murti, the god trinity concept part of Hinduism in Bali, students learn
the basic technique of Mepantigan. Although practitioners gain physical fitness, Mepantigan has also been
known to release stress and provide valuable lessons in comradeship and sportsmanship. With an emphasis
on emotional and spiritual intelligence, this experience is one of a kind. Students also get to learn Kecak
Kecos, traditional drumming, and finish the day being part of a fire dance!
Ocean Gardener is an NGO founded in 2016, and is dedicated to coral reef education. With 20+ years
experience in Coral Farming, OC staff now use their knowledge & experience for educational purposes.
Students will be able to get involved in a number of hands-on conservation and service tasks during this
program, to help restore this delicate ecosystem.
• Intro to Coral Ecology: The first part of the tour consists of a video and live demonstration
program to learn about coral biology and coral reef ecology.
• Coral Farm Tour: After learning how to use the equipment, and a quick video description of
the farm, students will tour the farm accompanied by the OC staff.
• Coral Propagation: Students will collect coral frags, apply their new coral knowledge and
then use the corals they have fragmented to propagate new artificial reefs.
• Snorkel on the Artificial Reefs: Students will have the opportunity to snorkel on the artificial
coral garden. They will be able to clearly see the different growth stages of the corals & the
progress made from the work done by previous groups.
SPECIAL NEEDS EDUCATION PROGRAM (SJAKI TARI -US) & UBUD CULTURAL DAY
Sjaki-Tari-Us are a school in Bali working to raise the standard of education for children and young adults
with special needs. Your students have a chance to work with the school in providing a safe and stimulating
environment for the children there as well as helping in educational and physical activities. It’s a great
opportunity for the SN students to build their confidence and practice interacting with new people as well
as learning new skills!
That afternoon students will have a hands-on experience in the craft capital of Bali, Ubud, students can
choose from a range of cultural workshops including, wood carving, dancing, art or gamelan. A final
activity for the day could be a visit to the famous Ubud Monkey Forest to observe the lively Long-Tailed
Macaques. Observe the monkeys in the forest and learn about their behaviour and biology from your EFT
guide.
On the outskirts of Amed are small, rural communities relying on subsistence agriculture. They live high in the
hillsides where soil fertility is low and make a meagre living. We work closely Rumah Sehat, a humanitarian
project funded by Rotary Club Bali and Hope Island Australia, to help these villages and the schools found
there with long-term solutions to some of the social, economic and health issues they face. Students will trek
to these remote communities carrying food, building materials and medical supplies. The trek is challenging
but rewarded with beautiful views of the landscape and the gratitude of the community.
There is a small school in the community that a handful of teenagers attend. Although they have English
and computer lessons, their chances of employment after school are minimal because they don’t have the
confidence or transferable skills to enter the job world. Part of our project with Rumah Sehat is to give these
teenagers the best chance at living a fulfilled life and equipping them with the skills they need to find
employment. We encourage your students to spend some time with the local students and work with them
to practise their English, interview role-play or other basic skills they may need to improve their chances of
employment. The local teenagers are extremely keen to learn from international students and it’s a great
opportunity for both groups to step outside their comfort zones, learn, share and develop new skills!
Students see first-hand the effects of plastics on our oceans and will work together to conduct a beach
clean-up in the area. We work with ‘Trash heroes’ to ensure that the waste we collect is disposed of in an
appropriate manner and recycled where possible. The data collected about the different sorts of waste
found will then be submitted to the International Coastal Clean-up database so that we can discuss the
significance of our findings!
After sorting and discussing the different types of rubbish found students can get hands-on with an Eco-brick
project. Segregating and packing recycled materials into plastic bottles to create useful materials for
building. It’s up to the students what they want to build, it could be something useful to the community such
as a wall or recycling container, or it could be something educational to engage the community like an art
structure! The eco bricks can be used and reused over again to make various structures, ultimately enriching
the community and creating eco-friendly spaces.
Families in these areas live on an income of less than USD100/year. The Pay-It-Forward project works by a
sponsored calf being given to a family who then take care of the calf until maturity. The first calf produced
by the cow is donated to another local family, “paying it forward” so that even more people can improve
their livelihood. Ecofieldtrips has successfully managed to gain sponsorships to buy 10 calves for poor
families to date. Schools can contribute by sponsoring a female calf for a local family, thereby empowering
them to take control of their lives in the long term.
Students will learn how to ID various fish and invertebrate species on the coral reef a short swim off a
beautiful tropical beach. For those preferring to dive in some of Bali’s premier locations, we are able to go
to Amed, near the eastern tip of Bali which is host to fringing coral reefs in the shadow of the island’s tallest
volcano, Mt. Agung. Due to the island’s volcanic history, the beaches are strewn with black sand and the
marine biodiversity diversity is unparalleled anywhere else in the world. The World famous Tulamben Wreck
Dive Site is approximately 30 mins from Les Village and is an amazing site for both divers and snorkelers.
Through innovative and hands-on learning exhibits, visitors to the Center for Marine Conservation will learn
about the Coral Triangle region’s unique biodiversity, its people’s well-being & livelihood, as well as the vital
importance of marine protection. The Center is run by Indonesian foundation Coral Triangle Center (CTC), a
non-profit organization based in Bali. Established in 2010, CTC provides education, training, and makes sure
that marine protected areas within the world’s epicenter of marine biodiversity are managed effectively.
Students will get the chance to participate in various marine-themed workshops, including clay coral
sculpting & Indonesia’s first ever coral reef-based Escape Room!
Off the coast of Serangan Island lie vast seagrass meadows rich in biodiversity. Led by our Biologists,
students can explore these rich meadows, through snorkelling or walking (tide dependant). They discover
the many species this ecosystem shelters and learning the important role seagrass has in tropical oceans.
From cake urchins to small eels, students will be mesmerized by the diversity of life found hiding between the
seagrass blades. After uncovering the secrets of the seagrass meadows students explore the near-by
mangrove forest where they are introduced to the ecology and ecosystem services related to this
fascinating habitat.
The morning begins with a paddle-boarding lesson at Sanur beach where the bay is flat, shallow and
covered in healthy seagrass beds. Students have fun learning how to balance and control the boards
before heading out to explore these underwater forests. After lunch by the beach, students then have the
Renowned around the world as an incredible surfing destination, Bali entices thousands of surfers to come
catch a clean break each year. Situated on the mellow crystal clear blue waters of Sanur’s coastline, Rip
Curl’s School of Surf provides students with an excellent opportunity to learn to surf in one of the world’s best
surfing destinations. Away from the hordes learning to surf along Kuta beach, students will be taught how to
read the waves and ride the board on a tranquil reef break a short boat ride from Sanur beach. Students
can have one to five days learning to surf with Rip Curl’s Surf School, with each day helping them to
progress up another surfing level.
We head north of Ubud for one night at the beautiful jungle retreat, Bali Eco. After a welcome morning
break including traditional coffee and sweets, students will journey through spice gardens sampling local
flavours. As students trek through fruit plantations, stream crossings, forests and rice paddy fields they will see
how the landscape is utilised by local communities and assess their impact on the environment. Lunch is a
picnic prepared next to a hidden Balinese temple nestled among paddy fields. In the evening after a
delicious buffet dinner, students will join their Ecofieldtrips group leader for a Night Walk.
The next morning, the volcano trek starts with the group setting off before sunrise and heading for Mount
Batur. This stunning active volcano offers a challenging, yet fascinating climb, which is well rewarded with
For those who are up for an even greater challenge there is the opportunity for the students to spend the
night camping on Mt Batur, waking up to the most breath-taking sunrise!
If a combination of cool freshwater, adventure and spectacular scenery is what you are looking for, we
offer a half day of white water rafting through the valleys of Bali’s uplands. This adventure begins in the
foothills of the sacred Mount Agung, and takes you past ancient hanging trees, through terraced rice plains
and exhilarating white water rapids. When students have conquered the rapids and made it down to our
finishing point they will be greeted with a Balinese lunch overlooking the rice paddies and the river below.
Cross-country cycling is great physical activity through beautiful Balinese countryside. We make our way
through the rolling hills, stopping at points of interest to learn about the island's culture and history, students
really immerse themselves in the landscape and the Balinese way of life. Afterwards we have a delicious
traditional buffet lunch.
Bali tree top adventure is accessible for all ages and abilities, with different circuits of varying difficulty to
choose from. Students will be put their team work skills to the test as they take on the challenge to
manoeuvre themselves around the treetops of Bali.
On the last day, activities are dependent on the return flight departure time. We recommend a later flight
to maximize experiences on the final day. There is an opportunity for students to go on a Chocolate tour at
POD Chocolate Factory. Students will journey through the chocolate process all the way from the bean to
block. They will also create their own chocolate treat that they can take home with them. Ecofieldtrips will
then accompany your group back to the airport to ensure that you have a smooth start to your journey
home after your Bali adventure!
TEAMBUILDING
Our team is trained to run team-building workshops focusing on building students’ vital intra and inter-
personal skills such as communication, leadership and critical thinking. Each session involves a reflection
process, to ensure the students get the maximum benefit from the skill-specific workshops.
In the evenings, students will have the opportunity to participate in debates, presentations or documentary
nights led by our biologists. One of the exclusive Bali activities available is an evening spent with the local
snake expert, Ron Lilley. Accompanied by one or two surprise visitors, students are given a new
understanding and appreciation of these fascinating reptiles. On the final night of the trip, we arrange a visit
from the local Gamelan orchestra and dance troupe, where students have the privilege of experiencing
traditional Balinese song and dance. Activities can be tailored to suit a school’s demands.
Located just 12km off the Southeast of Bali, Nusa Lembongan is part of a group of three islands that make
up the Nusa Penida district. Students will have the opportunity to learn new skills such as seaweed farming &
coral planting, as well as exploring the mangroves & diverse rocky seashores with our knowledgeable
Biologists.
We will stay at the Seaweed Guesthouses (pictured above) during our stay on Nusa Lembongan.
Flores and Komodo are part of the Lesser Sunda chain of Indonesian islands, most known for their crater
lakes, dive sites and Komodo dragons. Flores really has something to offer everyone; an abundance of
marine and terrestrial life, remarkable land formations complete with breath-taking views and vibrant
culture. Enjoy a short trip here onboard a boat, diving, snorkelling, trekking or visiting the famed Komodo
dragons!
LOMBOK
Lombok is a little-known paradise considered to be the Bali of 1995 (before the tourists arrived!). With a
mountainous landscape, pristine white sandy beaches and turquoise clear waters full of life, Lombok is the
perfect location for students to be immersed in the natural beauty of Indonesia! The topography of the
island is dominated by mount Rinjani - the second highest volcano in Indonesia at 3726 m. With the
landscape being so varied we can explore a range of habitats right on our doorstep including mountainous
forest, coral reef, rocky shore and seagrass meadows.
NUSA PENIDA
Nusa Penida is a quiet and secluded sanctuary southeast of Bali. Situated within the hilly landscape and into
the forest, students will be accommodated in traditional chalets on an organic farm. With eco living facilities
