Curriculum checklist

Squares and cubes


o Know how to square and cube a number, and what that means
o Know how to find the square and cube root of a number and what that means
o Know how to estimate a square or cube using perfect squares and perfect cubes
o Apply the Pythagorean theorem to identify the lengths of the sides of right triangles
o Find the surface area of composite shapes and the volume of simple solids by applying
formulas
o describe/measure real space using these formulas
o understand the relationship between squared numbers and the two-dimensional plane
o understand the relationship between cubed numbers and three-dimensional space

Exponents
o express powers as repeated multiplication and in standard form
o identify the different components of a power
o understand what a power represents in the real world
o express numbers as addition of base ten powers and in scientific notation
o memorize and apply exponent laws to simplify expressions and equations

Rational numbers
o be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions
o understand fractions as; a ratio between two numbers, a division operation, and a
number unto itself, and be comfortable switching conceptually among these roles
o place fractions on a number line, and depict operations with fractions using a numbers
line
o reduce fractions to lowest terms and find the lowest common multiple to use when
clearing fractions
o converting common decimals into fractions, and vice versa

polynomials
o classify expressions as polynomials or not, and identify the degree of a polynomial
o simplify polynomial expressions
o add, subtract, multiply and divide two polynomial expressions
o apply these operations to simplify the area of shapes with polynomial measurements

Algebra
o Understand what variables are, and how to use them to create equations from word
problems
o when simplifying expressions:
o add, subtract, multiply and divide terms while keeping an equation balanced
o Clear fractions from an equation
o Convert decimal numbers into fractions
o Use the distributive property
Linear Equations
o Confidently plot coordinates on a cartesian plane
o Convert between a linear equation (which includes an =, an x, and a y), a list table of
values (coordinates) and a line on a graph
o Convert linear equations from standard form to slope/intercept form and vice versa
o Determine if a line is horizontal, vertical, or oblique from an equation
o Define the slope and the y-intercept of a line from a graphed line or an equation
o Connect the concepts of variable rate and base rate to y-intercept and slope

Finances
o Create a realistic budget
o Understand simple interest

Statistics
o Understand the uses of mean, median, and mode
o identify the mean, median, and mode of a data series
o understand the difference between a linear relationship on a cartesian plane and a line
graph on an x/y axis
o identify dependent and independent variables
o classify different ways of representing data, and understand the benefits and drawbacks
of representing data visually
o be able to turn a data set into a graph
o extrapolate and interpolate from a graph

probability
o know how to apply the terms outcome, event, experiment, and probability
o understand the use of a tree diagram
o use the addition rule to find the probability of either of two events happening
o use the multiplication rule to find the probability of two events happening together
o understand that complimentary event sum to 1
o know the difference between dependent and independent events

overall
o become very comfortable applying the order of operations to a variety of expressions
and equations
o develop comfort with adding and subtracting integers under 100 without a calculator
o develop an understanding of how math is used to describe and interpret relationships in
the real world, and how that understanding can be used to better our lives
