    Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS), an autosomal recessive genetic disorder involving multiple organ systems, is characterized by exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, neurocognitive dysfunction, bone marrow failure, and leukemia predisposition. Additional organ systems, such as skeletal, hepatic, cardiac, immunologic, and dental systems, may also be affected. After cystic fibrosis, SDS is the second most common cause of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in children. The International Congress on Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome has been held biannually since 2001 to promote the exchange of scientific and medical information between clinical and basic science investigators and clinical leaders involved in patient care. The Sixth International Congress on Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome in 2011 should be especially exciting given the recent identification of the Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond Syndrome (SBDS, also simply referred to as SDS) gene that is mutated in this syndrome, and ongoing investigations into SBDS protein function. The goal of this conference is to present a selection of the most important recent advances in our understanding of: (i) the clinical features, current management, and treatment of SDS, and (ii) the molecular function of SBDS in hematopoiesis, leukemogenesis, and organogenesis. The program will provide a neutral forum for discussion and interaction in which a diverse group of participants can contribute to the development of novel ideas for understanding the cellular and molecular biology of inherited marrow failure syndromes and how these insights might advance diagnosis, management, and treatment of these patients.
