Optimization Project
Guiding Question:
How "Volume Optimized” are the cans at the grocery store?
Each can in the store is made ofa certain amount of material. Does the material used enclose the most
volume that it could?
PartA
Process:
Each group must have 2-3 people.
1, Each person contributes one cylindrical can (all cans must be for different products and be
different sizes.
2. Calculate the amount of material used to make the cans. For our purposes, the surface area will
suffice - we will not take the thickness of the material into consideration.
3, For each can, you need to calculate the maximum volume the material could hold.
Report the volume optimization as a ratio:
‘Actual volume of the container
Optimal volume of the container
Product:
You will create a visually appealing display with
a. photographs of your containers
height, radius, surface area, and volume of each can and each container’s volume optimization
c. clear explanation of the calculations used to calculate the optimum volume of your containers
a. agraph of the volume function in the feasible domain, witha point marking the optimal volume
and a point marking the actual volume of the container
Part B - Choose one path, B1 or BZ
BL:
Process:
For one of your original containers, design a
rectangular shipping box to hold 2 dozen of your
containers. You can use any arrangement of the
containers (single layer, double layer, etc.),
Determine the amount of “wasted” space in the
box.
Product:
You will create a 3D model of your shipping box
(with no lid so we can see inside of the box),
showing the placement of the containers in the
ox. Calculate the amount of volume “wasted” in
the box. Determine a new product to be stored in
these containers and name your product.
Decorate the outside (sides only) in an attractive
way.
synthesis:
Why do you think companies use cylindrical
containers and ship in rectangular boxes that
waste space? Would you do it differently?
B
Process:
For one of your original containers, design a new
container to hold your product. The container
should be a basic geometric shape with known
volume and SA formulas; no irregular shapes (it
could be a rectangular “box” shape, a cone, even
a sphere). The new container should either:
1. use the same amount of material as the
original container (same surface area)
and should have the maximum possible
volume for that shape, or
2, hold the same volume and use the least
amount of material.
Product:
You will create a 3D model of your new
containers with all dimensions labeled. Include a
clear explanation of the calculus and algebra
calculations used to determine the maximum
possible volume of your new container.
