1 Introduction
This manual describes how to take a logfile and a multiple pulse collection. When questions or
problems arise, don’t hesitate to contact Elster-Instromet NV (email: aftersales@elster-instromet.com
or contact your local agent). Before starting, foresee a computer with UNIFORM installed and a
suitable RS485/RS232 converter. Best is to use UNIFORM version 3.01, update’s can be obtained at
Elster-Instromet.

 Note:
Multiple pulse collections can only be taken from UFM’s with series IV electronics!

2 Connect to UFM

2.1 Verifying the Connection Settings

Make sure you know the communication settings of the UFM port connected to the computer. When
using port C or D, use the RS485 converter.

Series IV electronics has as standard communication settings:

Port Type cable Protocol Baudrate

A RS232 Uniform 4800
B RS232 Uniform 4800
C RS485 Uniform 38400
D RS485 Uniform 4800
NOTE: These are standard settings and could have been changed on site or upon request.

2.2 Making Connection

Open UNIFORM, and go to “Flowmeter”, “Instrument selection”.

The following screen (see next page) will pop-up. Fill the tabs “Instromet Selection”
and “Connection Settings” correctly in (according to your UFM and the used
communication port).

• Your UFM-type. • Correct Communication Port (PC) (e.g.
• The communication Protocol: UNIFORM COM1).
or ModBus. • Connection type should be: Direct.
• If you use ModBus, fill in the right • The correct Baudrate.
address. • Parity should be: None.

When connection settings are filled in correctly, go to: “Flowmeter”, “Auto Detect”.
The following screens will appear:

The UFM is detected and selected, press “OK”.

Confirm again, press “YES”.

Press “Yes”, the current parameter settings of your UFM are loaded in UNIFORM. Now the
computer is connected to the UFM.

3 Taking a logfile
When UNIFORM is connected with the UFM, press “Select Log File”. A saving window
will pop-up. Choose a name and a place on the computer where the logfile will be written and
press “Open”.
By pressing the “Record Log File” button, UNIFORM starts logging. How long UNIFORM
is logging will be visual in the tool bar. A log file of 5 to 10 minutes is normally long enough.
Stop logging is done by pressing the “Stop Logger” button.

NOTE:

When there are problems with the meter, try to take the logfile when the problem arises.

4 Taking a multiple pulse collection

4.1 Setting password

Taking a multiple pulse collection is password protected. Password level-1 is needed. Initially this is
“password1”, however it’s recommended that this is changed on site. When the password is lost,
contact Elster-Instromet NV.

Set the password by going to: “Flowmeter”, “Passwords”, “User Password”.

Enter the password for ‘level-1-rights’.

If it is accepted the following screen will pop-up.

If not accepted, the password is wrong: contact Elster-Instromet NV.

4.2 Sample View

To ensure that the pulses are completely taken, the detection points of an axial path and a swirl path
need to be measured. This is done through sample view.

Go to: “Flowmeter”, “Miscellaneous Functions”, “Sample View”.

Choose “transducer” T1A, and press “Trigger”. The following screen will be generated:

Under “Detection Point”, a value is generated. Subtract 100 from this value and enter it at
“Start Sample”.
In “Sample” field enter value 300.
Press “Trigger” again. A screen similar to the picture below (with a pulse visual) should be
generated:

Note the value at detection point in the table below, and repeat step 1 to 3 for all the
transducers:
Transducers* Detection Point
T1A
T1B
T2A
T2B
T3A
T3B
T4A
T4B
T5A
T5B
* Total amount of transducers depends on the type of UFM.
E.g.: A Q.Sonic-3 only has transducers T1A to T3B. Transducers T4A to T5B will not be visual and should be ignored in
the table above.

Close the Sample-View-screen, by pressing “X” (don’t close UNIFORM entirely!).

4.3 Taking a Multiple Pulse Collection

Go to: “Flowmeter”, “Miscellaneous Functions”, “Multiple Pulse

Collection”. The following screen will pop-up:

Fill the boxes in as follows:

• “Window Start”: Subtract 200 from the lowest “detection point” measured with sample
view.
• “Window Size”: Take the difference of the lowest and the highest “detection point”
measured with sample view and add 400.
• “Consecutive repetitions in a collection”: “1”
• “Minutes between collections”: “0”
• “Number of collections”: “5”
Press “Get” and a saving window will pop-up. Choose a name and a place on the computer
where the Multiple pulse collection will be written and press “Save”.
UNIFORM starts taking the pulses. This may take a while. Particularly when the baudrate of the
used communication port is low, a "Time Out" error may occur:

Press "Retry", this shouldn't influence the pulse collection.

When the Pulses are taken press “Done” and the Multiple Puls Collection screen will be
closed.

5 Closing UNIFORM

When the Multiple Pulse Collection is taken, don’t forget to close UNIFORM entirely,

because now, through the ‘level-1-password’, everyone has ‘level-1-rights’. By closing

UNIFORM, all these rights are eliminated as well.
