Introduction 1
This chapter gives a brief introduction to the Opsis IOMan data logging and control sys-
tem. An overview of the modules, the communication and IOMan software interfaces is
also provided.
The system can handle up to 254 input and 254 output signals. To configure the system, an
installation unit is selected and different modules are installed to meet the signal require-
ments.
Sensors with serial and industrial protocols are connected using serial ports at the compu-
ter where also the software is installed for data handling. The applications for IOMan sys-
tems include data handling for Opsis gasmonitoring system, and stand alone system for
data acquisition. The IOMan system can be connected to any PC using the serial port of
the computer and is easily upgraded by adding modules.
This “IOMan User’s Guide” will only describe the hardware part and the sensor part. For
the other parts of the system, EnviMan, IO256, IOManager etc., refer to appropriate man-
ual.

mode is pre-set by the jumper at J2, to deactivate and switch to passive mode simply move
the jumper at J2 to J1.

Connecting the modules 3
When building a large IOMan system with lot of modules there will be some restrictions
of how to use the power modules.
This chapter describes how to connect the modules, the restrictions and how to install a
system operating with multiple power modules.
3.2 Chain
The chain connects the modules to each other, providing a link between them, allowing for
synchronising the communication
19
Connecting the modules
9-pin 25-pin
Note: When using a serial cable to a 9-pin connection the TX and RX is switched com-
pared to a 25-pin connection. For a 9-pin connection the TX is at pin #3 and the RX at
pin #2. For a 25-pin connection the TX is at pin #2 and the RX at pin #3. The GND for
a 9-pin is at pin #5 and for the 25-pin at pin #7.

When connecting more than one PM020 in a system the ribbon cable is used to link the
power modules together. Compare the two following examples to understand the differ-
ence between one power module system and multiple power module system.
20
Connecting the modules
With several power modules the connection of the ribbon cable is from the “bus in” on the
first PM020 to the “bus out” on the second PM020 and so on.

Sensors 5
This chapter describes the installation of various sensors to the IOMan system. The instal-
lation should only be made by qualified technicians or by an Opsis representative. The in-
formation seen here is for reference only.
The chapter describes the most common sensors to the IOMan system, their technical de-
scription and how they are connected to the modules.
