AR 3407: STRUCTURAL MECHANICS

Module 1

1. What is pure bending condition of the beams? Explain with an example.

2. What are the assumptions considered for pure bending condition of the beams?
3. What is the neutral axis of the beam
4. Derive the formula for pure bending –
𝜎 𝑀 𝐸
= = 𝑅,
𝑦 𝐼

where, 𝜎 = bending stress acting at a distance 𝑦 from the neutral axis, 𝑀 = bending
moment acting at the cross-section of the beam, 𝐼 = moment of inertia of the cross-
section of the beam, 𝐸 = modulus of elasticity of the material of the beam, and 𝑅 =
radius of curvature of the neutral axis of the beam.

5. What is the section modulus of a cross-section of the beam? Find section modulus for
regular cross-sections like rectangular, circle, trapezoidal, etc.
6. Show the distribution of bending stress in cross-section of the beam. Consider any regular
cross-section of the beam.
7. What is modular ratio of the composite beams?
