1) A rifle is a long gun whose barrel has been grooved or "rifled" on the inside with spiral channels. (For
comparison, a long gun with a smooth bore is called a musket.) Bullets fired from a rifled barrel spin. This gives
them greater stability in flight and thus greater accuracy when fired. Since 1964, the standard infantry weapon
in the US Army has been the .22 caliber M16 rifle. Due to rifling, a bullet fired from an M16 rotates two and a
half times on its journey from the breech to the muzzle (end of the rifle). Given a barrel length of 510 mm and a
muzzle velocity of 950 m/s, determine the angular velocity of the bullet rotating about its central axis of
symmetry as it leaves the muzzle. You may assume the expanding gasses in the gun barrel exert a constant force
on the bullet while it is in the barrel. (10 pts)

2) A projectile of mass m is launched with an initial velocity of ⃑⃑⃑⃑

𝑣0 . Find as functions of time:
a) the angular momentum (5 pts)
b) the torque (5 pts)
of the projectile relative to a horizonal axis that passes through the launch point.

3) A yo-yo can be treated as 2 solid disks each of mass M and radius R. A string is wrapped around a small
cylinder of negligible mass and radius r in the center of the yo-yo. The mass of the string can be ignored. Before
we release the yo-yo, the string is stretched in the vertical direction. Initially, the yo-yo is at rest. After the yo-
yo is released the string unwinds without slipping on the cylinder;

(Hint: The moment of inertia of a disk rotating about its center is 𝐼𝑐𝑚 = 2 𝑀𝑅 2 )
a) Calculate the angular acceleration (4 pts)
b) Calculate the acceleration of the center of mass (2 pts)
c) Find the tension in the string (4 pts)

.
4) A solid steel ball of mass 0.50 kg and radius 10 cm is placed against a spring. The spring has a spring
constant of k=100N/m. The ball is then pushed to compress the spring by 30 cm. It is released from rest and
slides across a horizontal frictionless surface. After a short time the surface becomes rough with a co-efficient
of kinetic friction of 0.25. How much time passes after entering the rough portion of the surface before the ball
begins to roll without slipping? (10 pts)
5) Two disks, with identical masses but different radii (r and 2r) are spinning on frictionless bearings with the
same angular speed ω0 but in opposite directions. The two disks are brought slowly together and the resulting
frictional force between their surfaces eventually brings them to a common angular velocity. How much work
was done by the friction force in this process? (10 pts)
