R. Rzepka
I. DESCRIPTION:

Condemning limits have been identified for the GEB16 motor mounting bolts, relative to missing
or broken bolts, before action needs to be taken, as there have been instances where bolts have
been found loose or broken and lying in the axle box.

II. MODELS AFFECTED:

5GDY85 & 5GDY106 – The two GDY model styles that use the GEB16 traction motor

III. CONDEMNING CRITERIA:

1. No more than three (3) total bolts loose, missing or broken (there are a total of 12 bolts
holding the GEB16 to the transmission)

2. No two (2) bolts next to each other

3. No more than two (2) bolts in the lower or upper half – NOT counting the bolts exactly at
the 3 and 9 O’clock positions (there are 5 bolts in the lower and 5 bolts in the upper half)

IV. CORRECT GEB16 MOTOR MOUNTING PROCEDURE:

GE Technical Manual GEK-91680A Section 10.2 – 10.3 covers the correct assembly procedures
to address GEB16 mounting bolt risk.
