LESSON PLAN

Allocated Time: ​45 minutes

Anticipatory Set: ​To start out this lesson I will be continuing the Word of the Day. For this
lesson the word is “Falling Action”. I will give the students the definition-Events that occur as the
character works towards the resolution of the conflict. Then, I will give students an example
sentence-In “Dug’s Special Mission” the falling action occurs when Dug runs away. Students will
copy this down into their notebooks.

Objective and Purpose:


Students will be able to identify and list 8 descriptors of the main character in “August Heat”.
Students will be able to comprehend and discuss themes in “August Heat”.

Input and Resources: ​I will be introducing our new unit called, “Strange and Eerie”. I will have
students flip open to page 562 and begin browsing the different short stories.

Identified Modeling: ​I will show the students how to fill in their character outline worksheet and
give them one example.
Checking for Understanding: ​Throughout the story I will be asking students comprehension
questions to see if they’re following. I will also walk around while students are working on their
character outline worksheet and see if anyone has any questions.

Guided Practice: ​Together, as a class, we will read through the short story, “August Heat”.
Along the way I will ask questions to check their understanding of the story.

Independent Practice: ​Students will get a character outline worksheet that requires them to
use their “8 Ways an Author Reveals a Character” sheet they got last week. The students will
have the opportunity to draw on their character outline worksheet or they can write. Although,
they must use one of the characters in the story and find 8 different ways to describe the
character.

Evaluation Criteria: ​Students will continue to work on their character worksheets and then they
will turn them in for a grade.
