SECTION 7
Discuss about concept of “cradle-to-grave” and “cradle-to-cradle”? Explore how that concept
relates to Construction.

CRADLE TO GRAVE
A cradle-to-grave study provides an overview of the complete life cycle of a
commodity-from resource extraction (cradle) to usage and disposal (grave) phases. This is a
method used to determine the environmental impacts associated with all phases of a product's
life – from extraction of raw materials to refining, production, delivery, usage, repair and
maintenance, right through to the step of disposal or recycling. They help to negate a narrow
perspective on environmental claims – a product doesn't need green just because, for
example, it's a good insulator, there are several other considerations that need to be weighed
before it can really make that argument.

CRADLE TO CRADLE

It's about the selective collection of building project materials that can go through
potentially endless life cycles. Unlike recycling or the eco- idea, cradle to cradle is taking it a
step further. Energy saving alone falls short and also has adverse consequences, such as the
sick building syndrome where office workers in particular feel ill during long-term stays in
buildings. However, in architecture, cradle to cradle has the aim of using the environment
rather than simply reducing damaging results. The idea is based on three principles:
considering waste as food, using renewable energy sources and promoting diversity.
