Engelmann Prickly Pear: Opuntia engelmannii


Range: Engelmann Prickly
Pears can be found from
southeast California all the
way to the Mississippi.

Typical Size: The size


varies.

Distinguishing/Key
Features: The Engelmann Prickly Pear has elliptical pads that range in color from yellow-green
to green. When in bloom they have yellow or orange flowers that turn to deep red or purple
fruits.

Habitat: Desert regions with elevations between 1000 and 8000 feet.

Interesting Observations: The pads of the Engelmann Prickly Pear can grow out in all
directions.

Interesting Facts: Both the pad and the fruit of the Engelmann Prickly Pear can be used as
food.

Fairy Duster Bush: Calliandra eriophylla

Range: Southern United States.

Typical Size: 3 feet.

Distinguishing/Key Features: A small shrub with


little flower pots that range from yellow, pink, to white.

Habitat: Desert regions.

Interesting Observations: The bush had little hot


pink fluffs.

Golden Barrel Cactus:


Range: The Golden Barrel Cactus is endemic
to east-central Mexico.

Typical Size: Around 3 ½ feet big.

Distinguishing/Key Features: The Golden


Barrel Cactus is a round cactus with golden
spines.

Habitat: Volcanic rock slopes at elevations


around 4500 feet.

Interesting Observations: The Golden


Barrel Cactus was one of the few cacti currently blooming.

Golden Hedgehog: Echinocereus nicholii


Range: Sonoran Desert.

Typical Size: 8 inches.

Distinguishing/Key Features: Long


golden spines on the relatively short
green/yellow cactus.

Habitat: The Golden Hedgehog Cactus


can be found in dry washes, hillsides,
desert plains, scrubland, and low hills.

Interesting Observations: The Golden


Hedgehog was green at the base and slowly
became more yellow towards the tips.

Golden Torch: Bergerocactus emoryi


Range: The Golden Torch grows in Baja
California from elevations of sea level to 1000
feet.

Typical Size: The Golden Torch grows up to 3


feet tall and is around two inches across.

Distinguishing/Key Features: The Golden


Torch is densely covered in spines. It is a thin
medium cactus with colorations between a
whitish to a golden orange.

Habitat: The Golden Torch grows on grassy or


wooden slopes on the Pacific coast.

Interesting Observations: The Golden Torch has multiple different colored arms on the same
plant.
