A. Introduction
The object that will be discussed in this paper is a short story titled The
Bet by Anton Chekhov.
This story tells about a banker, one night, was anxious to remember the
events of fifteen years ago. Fifteen years ago, there was a debate during a party
at the banker's house which was a debate about the death penalty and universal
life imprisonment. At that time there was a lawyer who expressed the opinion
that he preferred to be in jail and live a little while than dead instantly. That
matter instantly made the banker angry, he disagreed, then the banker took a bet
that he would give two million dollars if the lawyer wanted to be in jail for
fifteen years near the house pavilion. Finally the lawyer agreed.
And the lawyer spent his time in the pavilion, his first year he spent his
time by reading. In his second year, he studied roman literature and ancient
Greek literature. In the fifth year he played the piano again. Entering the middle
sixth year the lawyer studies philosophy and history passionately. In the year of
the ten attorneys changed he studied the new testament books and theology.
Look all these events the banker also thought of ways to get rid of the lawyer.
At 3 a.m. in the morning, the banker immediately went to the pavilion
accompanied by an aide to ensure the detainee's departure. While silent, he took
the letter on the table as a sign of canceling two billion in payment. He took the
letter home and put it in a fireproof storage box.
In a short story, a lot of things contained in it, such as themes, plot,
setting, characters & characterizations, as well as a number of problems
experienced or faced by characters, etc. Similarly, in the short story "The Bet"
by Anton Chekhov. Therefore, the purpose of writing this paper is to find out the
intrinsic elements contained in the short story "The Bet" by Anton Chekhov,
especially in terms of characters / characterizations and plots.
Based on the description above, the author will compile a paper entitled
"Analysis of Short Story Intrinsic Elements" The Bet "by Anton Chekhov".
Especially in the element of character / characterization and plot. In addition, the
author will write the approach used in literary theory based on expert quotations.
