Simon Oliver Sinek considers the people who are born 1984 and after as a millennial.

According to Sinek, millennials have been receiving a bad reputation. They have very less
than ideal reputation and are considered as unfocused, narcissistic and lazy. Due to these
reasons, corporate environment often rejects their dreams of leading purposeful career.
Corporate leaders believe that millennials lack basic qualities like gratitude and patience. He
considers four major reasons for millennials misery.
 Parenting
 Technology
 Impatience
 Environment

As Sinek states abot the failed parenting strategies. Kids were told “They are special and
they can have anything they desire”. Later he talks about how when they start their
professional life, they come to realize that was all bullshit; which later leads their self-image
to be shattered.

However, in my opinion we all are special in one way or other no matter what generation
we belong to. Being special doesn’t mean that we deserve more than other or we are
special in comparison to other generations. We are all unique and special in our own way.
We all have a capacity to make a difference in our own way. We human are the most special
living thing in this world. If all of these qualities does not make us special then what does.

Simon then goes to share the comparative addictive nature of the social media with major
addictions like smoking, drinking and gambling. He states “Engagement with social media
and our cell phones releases a chemical called dopamine, that’s why when you get a text it
feels good right, so you know we’ve all had a weird feeling a little bit down and feeling a bit
lonely and so you send out 10 texts to 10 friends and hi, hi, hi, hi, because it feels good when
you get a response”.

Interestingly children who are not millennials have felt the tight grip of smoking, drinking or
gambling. So how can we say that is the issue for the millennials alone. Comparing social
media to addictions like smoking or drinking is not at all sensible. Human beings have been
chasing the high of dopamine since the beginning of time one way or another. Talking about
the friendship, millennials have had got married through the social media let alone having a
good friendship. Sometimes even though we see many people who are available to chat in
social sites, we don’t. This is the case for all people not just millennials. So how can we say
that this issue is just related to millennials.

Mr. Sinek refers to the challenge of “instant gratification” and states that millennials can
have whatever they want whenever they want. But in my opinion, he is missing couple of
important points here. Young people have been impatient from the beginning of time not
just the millennials. To this way we can see old people being impatient in the traffic,
breaking the rules just to get a shortcut and complete their work quickly. In fact millennials
are far too much patient than they should be. The world is constantly changing every second
and if they can not chase up with that speed, they will again be doomed as failure.
Sinek also talks about increase rate in suicide. “The best-case scenario is you have an entire
population growing up and going through life and just never really in finding joy, they’ll
never really find deep, deep fulfilment in work or in life.” Sinek should not have sent out such
a message to the millennials when despite the challenges they are facing, they are still
happy in their world.

Sinek also mentions that “We’re taking this amazing group of young fantastic kids who
would have just been dealt a bad hand it’s no fault of their own and we put them in
corporate environments that care more about the numbers and they do about the kids. They
care more about the short-term gains than the long term life of this young human being we
care more about the year than the lifetime right and so we are putting them in corporate
environments that aren’t helping them build their confidence that aren’t helping them learn
the skills of cooperation.” This is not a new issue. It is just getting rapidly worse and is totally
fuled by greed. Today’s challenge is the same as it was decades ago.

It is not parenting, technology, impatient or enviromment that is an issue. These are all the
realities of life that have been there since the evolvement of human civilization. Technology
is the only thing that is new in the list but putting all the blame in technology is not justified
at all.
