Question 1

(a) Show that for an ideal gas

c p −c v =R , where c p is the specific heat at constant pressure, c v
is the specific heat at constant volume and R is the gas constant. [4
marks]

(b) Is it possible to expand an ideal gas isothermally in an adiabatic piston-cylinder device? Explain.
[4 marks]

(c) A rigid tank contains 10 kg of air at 350 kPa and 27oC. The air is now heated until its pressure doubles.
Air can be treated as an ideal gas with R=0.287 kJ/kg.K and c v is 0.718 kJ/kg.
i. Determine the volume of the tank [m3].
ii. Determine the amount of heat transfer [kJ].
[12 marks]

Question 2

(a) Can a steady flow device involves a boundary work? Please explain briefly.
[4 marks]

(b) Steam flows steadily through a turbine of a steam power plant. During the process 2000 kJ/min of heat
is lost from the turbine to the surrounding air. The inlet conditions of the steam are 12.5 MPa, 520  oC
and with a velocity of 100 m/s, while the exit conditions are 10 kPa, 92 percent quality and with a
velocity of 60 m/s. The mass flow rate of the steam is 15 kg/s. Neglecting changes in potential energy
determine,
i. the power output of the turbine [kW].
ii. the turbine inlet diameter [mm].
