Activity 5 : DC Motor - CEMF

Name: ______________________________

Problem Solving:

1. The counter emf of a shunt motor with an armature resistance of 0.26 ohm is
218.8 volts. Calculate the impressed voltage across the armature winding whose
armature current is 35.4 ampere. (Assume 2 volt brush drop).

2. What current will flow in the armature of a 240 volt shunt motor whose armature
resistance is 0.40 ohm, when the counter emf is 230 V ? Assume a 2 volt brush drop.
Determine also the voltage drop in the armature circuit.

3. A 500 hp 600 volt compound motor operates at a speed of 495 rpm at full load, if
the flux per pole is 9.1x106 maxwells and the armature resistance is 0.015. Calculate
(a) counter emf, (b) the armature current (assume a value of k = 1.5x10 -7 and a brush
drop of 5 volts).

4. If the load on the motor of Problem 3 is increased so that the armature current
rises to 800 ampere, at what speed will the motor operate, assuming that the flux
increases 9 %.

5. A 10 hp, 1750 rpm, 550 volt shunt motor has an armature resistance of 1.55 ohms.
If the armature takes 14.8 amps at full load. Calculate the counter emf develop by the
motor; power develop by the motor in watts and in horsepower (assume a 5 volt
brush drop).
