DE STIJL MOVEMENT

INTRODUCTION
The central goal of DE STIJL was the abolition of all the conventional boundaries
be it in painting, in architecture or in life. For them the world was seen as a
continuum in which all distinct categories, male and female, good and evil, human
and divine, inside and outside merged together.

The frame which acts as a limit for a composition was abolished and what
appeared on canvas was a fragment of boundless continuity. Same was applied for
architecture and no separation between inside and outside was conceived. This
was completely different from ally contained and enclosed traditional architecture.
De Stijl aimed for continuously flowing spaces in which there wasn’t any
separation boundary between inside and outside or one room to other.

However De Stijl was not an organized movement but a collection of frequently

changing architects who rarely met and never exhibited together.

The founding members were architects: Robert van’t Hoff, J.J.P. Oud and Jan Wils,
furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld, painters: Bart ban der Leck and Vilmos Huszar
and sculptor Georges Vantongerloo.
