Explain the MAIN IDEA(S) for the development of your responses
I have chosen spatial for my stimuli of this project/component. Throughout the exploration of this
stimuli, I would like to shoot architecture and develop a spacious response.

The meaning I would like to convey is to give the audience a new perspective of architecture in a
spacious way.

 I plan to create two shoots looking up
2 at modern architecture to give my
audience a new perspective/viewpoint
of modern architecture that they might
not get to see/experience in their daily
routines. I would like to make the
images feel spacious as I think this is
key for them to be able to understand
and interpret the images. I will shoot
on a digital camera and edit colours
on photoshop if need be.
I plan to create two shoots looking up
4 at old architecture to give my audience
a new perspective/viewpoint of old
architecture that they might not get to
see/experience in their daily routines. I
would like to make the images feel
spacious as this was something I liked
in the previous shoot. I also want to
prepuce the images in black and white
as I feel this would suit the old
architecture better. I will use
photoshop to edit the images in black
and white. I will shoot on my digital
camera using manual camera settings.
I achieved two shoots focusing on
looking up at modern architecture
however I think it could be a lot more
apparent that I was looking up which
means in the next coming shoots I need
to try looking up even more to make this
obvious. I ended up not editing the final
images any further as I was super
happy with the colours that I achieved
through technical components on my
camera for example, shutter speed,
aperture and ISO. I think the brightness
of the images is really nice as it makes
the images feel open and spacious
which is useful when it comes to the
audience being able to understand and
interpret the images with a clear open
mind. I used compositional techniques
to make the images feel balanced and
therefore appealing to the eye as well as
leading there eyes through the whole
image at the first glance to give them a
rough idea as to what they can explore.
Overall I like these two shoots but i need
to work on the looking up perspective
to make this obvious as without this
being obvious, my meaning is hard to
convey.
I achieved two shoots focusing on
looking up at old architecture and I think
I did this a lot better than I did in the
previous two shoots. I edited all of the
images on photoshop to be black and
white as well as adjusting the brightness
and contrast to suit each individual
image. I like how the black and white
compliments the old architecture
however I feel like it is quiet confine and
does feel at all spacious which is what I
am trying to do in this project and is
therefore a limitation of this shoot. I think
I prefer shooting modern architecture in
colour and should carry on with this
moving forwards however i do think it
could be cool to do a film shoot of old
architecture further down the line to see
how effective this could be. I think it
would be effective for the more mature
audience as it could be nostalgic for
them as film cameras were probably
around at the time of the old
architectural buildings being built.
 I plan to create another two shoots
6 focusing on looking up at modern
architecture once again. I will use a
similar viewpoint to that in some of the
images from shoot four where more of
the sky is included in the frame to
make the images feel super spacious
and open. I will use my digital camera
and will edit on photoshop if I think the
colours need to be adjusted. I will try
to incorporate more compositional
techniques so that the images are
appealing to the human eye. Instead
of doing two shoots focusing on one
building displaying modern
architecture, I would like to do two
separate shoots looking up at two
different buildings.
I plan to create a second shoot
8 focusing on looking up at modern
architecture again. I will make sure to
include a lot more of the blue sky in
my images as this is what makes them
feel spacious, meaning my meaning
can be clearly conveyed and
understood by the audience. I think I
should try to incorporate some
compositional techniques within this
shoot to give the images some more
structure.
I plan to create a different shoot for
10 this part of my project, looking up at
old architecture again as I can no
longer photograph modern
architecture due to the current
circumstances. I will shoot an old
church near my house but include the
elements I love about modern
architecture within this shoot.
Previously when I shot old architecture
I made my images black and white
which prevented them from feeling
spacious so this time I will shoot the
images on a sunny day with blue sky
so they do feel spacious and convey
my meaning well to the audience.
I achieved one shoot during week five
whereby I photographed the Blade in
Reading. It is a building that possesses
modern architectural elements which
suits this project very nicely as the many
windows create reflections making it feel
very spacious. The spaciousness of the
images means that I can correctly
convey my meaning. I wish I could have
created two shoots in these two weeks
however I did manage to do some
experimentation with the images form
this shoot. I used photoshop to
manipulate the images, duplicating
them and creating reflections. I
produced a really interesting
experimental image which created a
diamond shape in the centre. This open
diamond made the image feel super
open and spacious, relating well to my
meaning and project.
I successfully created another spacious
shoot looking up at modern architecture
and I think it works really nicely. The
blue sky reflects beautifully off of the
blue tinted windows, brightening the
images up even further and allowing
them to feel extremely spacious.
However, I didn’t leave enough space
surrounding the building for all of the
images which meant I was only left with
four final images instead of six. I really
enjoy how the building that is the
subject matter has curved edges as it
sort of draws the audiences eyes
towards the open, empty space, as this
is a key element to my meaning. I didn’t
manage to incorporate that many
compositional techniques like I wanted
to however I still think that the four final
images I produced are of a good
standard.
I achieved one shoot where I
photographed the old church near my
house. I tried to included elements from
my modern architecture shoots and I
think that this shoot of old architecture
turned out way better than the previous
shoot focusing on old architecture
because of this. I made sure to shoot
on a sunny day with blue skies and this
really helped to brighten up the church
and make the images feel spacious. I
tried to incorporate the looking up
perspective and the spacious elements
however it was hard to do both and I
think I can do a lot better so therefore I
will shoot the church again to make it
even better.
 This week I am planning to re-shoot
12 the old church near my house as in
the last shoot I didn’t manage to do
both the looking up perspective and
the spaciousness which are the two
key factors to my meaning being
conveyed. This week I will focus more
when shooting and try to incorporate
both of these elements really well so
my meaning can be clearly
understood by the viewers. I actually
enjoyed the way the church looked in
the previous shoot which was
unexpected as I am not a huge fan of
old architecture, so if I can make sure
to convey my meaning I think this will
be a great shoot.
For the final week, I have decided to
14 shoot some industrial architecture as
this is unfortunately the only other
building near my house that I have
access to. It is a newly built boathouse
which I will focus on liking up at
different angles to convey my meaning
well again. This means using the
looking up perspective and making the
images feel spacious through the
surrounding blue skies. I would like to
experiment with the eagles and
viewpoints in this shoot because I
think it could be quite interesting and
different from the rest of the shoots in
this project.
This shoot turned out a lot better than
the previous shoot of the old church
and I am thrilled. I managed to include
both the looking up perspective and the
spacious elements within the frame and
I produced four final images that all
convey my meaning super well due to
this. I wish I could have produced six
final images but because I was sousing
a lot more whilst shooting, a lot of the
images were the same or very similar.
Overall I am really happy with how this
shoot turned out and I am glad I
decided to re-shoot it because this one
is a lot better than the previous one.
I did in fact shoot the industrial looking
boathouse near me and I think for what
it was, I made something good out of it.
Although I didn’t intent on shooting this
type of architecture in the beginning of
my project, it happens to convey my
meaning still, through the use of the
looking up perspective and the
spacious elements. I think the blue sky
works really nice alongside the grey
steel component, creating a
complimenting contrast. It is not my
favourite shoot from the project but it
definitely works and I am super proud
that I made it work.

Describe the CONTEXT (influences, purposes and meanings) of your work

I have produced a piece of contextual research into architecture as a whole, exploring some of
the most famous architectural buildings to date.

I have also done some research into photographers who focus on shooting solely modern
architecture and solely old architecture to grasp a vague idea as to how they have done so.
These photographers are David Gutierrez and Ezra Stoller.

I have also done some more research into 3 other photographers who all use a similar
perspective or like to work with colour. Lars Focke likes to work with blue skies in his
architectural photography like me. Whilst Arnaud Bertrande and Iwan Baan both use a similar
looking up perspective to me.

REFLECT on your work critically as it progresses and on its completion

How are you refining your techniques and ideas?
 I think the colours worked really well at conveying my meaning which is to
2 make the surrounding space of the buildings feel spacious as the bright blue
sky contrasts really nicely alongside the darker buildings. The bright blue sky
makes the images feel happy and open which is useful for the viewer to
understand and interpret the image for themselves, working towards also
reaching a conclusion. I think I could have done a better job looking up at the
buildings as this wasn’t so obvious and this meant that my meaning could be
hard for the viewer to understand. I used compositional techniques like the rule
of thirds, to make my images feel balanced, and leading lines, to engage the
viewer better and lead their eyed thought the whole image at first glance to gain
a better understanding of what they’re working with. I think I could have
incorporated more compositional techniques, however, to make my images
technically more appealing to the viewer.
For these two shoots I used photoshop to edit them all to be black and white
4 as I think that black and white suits the old architecture better than colour
would. Although I do feel like the black and white makes the images feel a bit
confined and less spacious than I would like which isn’t so good because I am
trying to make them feel spacious. I did a much better job in these two shoots
at looking up at the building and making it apparent that this was my intention.
This is really good because it means that the audience can understand my
meaning a lot easer and better. I used compositional techniques in these
shoots too. I did a much better job at making my images feel balanced here, by
using the rule of thirds, so that the photographs are appealing to the viewer.
However, I could explore more compositional techniques in future shoots to
make sure that my photographs are appealing to the audience. Moving
forwards, I don’t think I want to shoot old architecture as it feels sort of
confining compared to modern architecture which displays a lot of windows
and therefore reflections to make the images feel very open and spacious.
However I do think it would be cool to shoot old architecture on film to give a
nostalgic feeling to my more mature audience.
For this shoot I produced six final images that I didn’t edit at all and then I also
6 produced three images that I experimented with on photoshop. I really like the
building I photographed in this shoot which is why I think I like it so much as a
whole. The mass amount of windows means that there is a lot of reflection
within the images which opens them up making them feel spacious. This is very
good as it helps to convey my meaning and for the audience to understand it
clearly. I also did some experimentation with this shoot using Adobe Photoshop
which I think worked quite nicely. I created three final images from the
experimentation which I tried to make feel spacious. The first two I made don’t
feel that spacious because I duplicated the building and created a reflection
which meant there was not much empty space. However, the third image I
duplicated the building four times and created a diamond shape in the centre
which was just the blue skies. This image felt very spacious and also looks very
appealing because there is a lot of symmetry and balance within it.
For this shoot I looked up at a modern building in Reading again. This shoot
8 looks really nice in my opinion and I think its because I have an eye for this
particular building. I really like its shape as it has curved edges instead of sharp,
crisp edges. But also, the windows have a blue tint to them which reflects the
blue skies above it beautifully. This enhances the blue tones within the images
that I absolutely love, making it feel very airy and spacious and therefore linking
well to my meaning for the project. I, of course, used the looking up
perspective within this shoot and I think that I did this very well too. Its obvious I
was looking up at the building which is good because this is a key factor within
my meaning. I love how the curved edges of the building lead the audiences
eyes towards the open/empty space which is the sky as this emphasises how
important the space is within the images. I didn’t use many compositional
techniques within this shoot and I think that I could try and incorporate more
into my next shoot to give my images some more structure.
 This shoot is slightly different to my previous shoots and goes against what I
10 said about continuing with shooting modern architecture. Due to the
circumstances I can no longer shoot modern architecture as I now have no
access to nay, however I do have some access to old architecture so I will have
to now start shooting old architecture instead. For this shoot, I photographed
an old church near my house. I decided to shoot on a sunny day with blue
skies as this is something I love about the images containing modern
architecture. I really think the blue sky made the images in this shoot pop and
feel spacious which is great because the last time I photographed old
architecture I went with a black and white filter and it Mae my images feel dark,
dreary and dull, preventing them form feeling spacious and linking to my
meaning. This shoot went quite well however I would like to re-shoot the
church as I noticed when analysing the images that I was unable to include
both the looking up perspective and the spacious elements. I was only able to
or one or the other but this is not good as these two things are what makes my
meaning stand out to the audience.
For this shoot I re-shot the old church near my house as previously I was
12 unhappy that I couldn’t incorporate the two parts of my meaning within my
images. In this shoot I was able to include both of these elements and therefore
the images I have produced convey my meaning a lot better. The images from
this shoot are also a lot brighter than the images form the previous shoot of the
same church and this is because I slowed the shutter speed down ever so
slightly so that more light could be let into the lens for longer. I still used a fats
shutter speed and low aperture, but the sitter speed was veer so slightly slower
than last time. This meant that the church had more of a white tone than brown
tone which really helped to open the mages up with brightness, leading to them
feeling a lot more spacious. It also helped that I left more empty space within
the images in this shoot because this blue sky seems to make the images feel
really spacious. Overall I am really happy that I decided to re-shoot the church
as I knew I could do a lot better than I did in shoot seven.
14 This is the final shoot I have done for this project and it is very different to the
previous shoots in terms of subject matter. As I no longer have access to many
buildings to shoot for this project, I’ve had to work with the buildings near my
house and so for this shoot I ended up photographing a newly built boathouse.
The boathouse possesses an industrial tone with grey steel planks and very
minimal windows. It’s also not very tall which isn’t ideal as I much prefer the
buildings that are more like skyscrapers. Regardless of the architectural type,
the shoot went well. I used the looking up perspective and blue sky to make
my images feel spacious. Because the building is quite bland itself I tried to
create some symmetry within this shoot and I think this element adds a lot to
the shoot. Symmetry is really appealing tot he human eye and therefore my
audience might feel relaxed looking at my symmetrical images. Although the
building wasn’t ideal for this project, I made it work and I think as a shoot it
turned out well.
