Lesson III- Human and Christian Education

Insight on the integration of human and Christian education in the lives of the students
as the heart (core) of Lasallian education.

De La Salle aimed to provide holistic education to the young, especially the poor.
It was achieved by providing not only human, but also, Christian education. Human
education enables the students to hone their individual skills and talents. The Lasallian
schools provides competent and well-structured education system in order to equip the
students of the essential tools not only to survive the real world but to be on top of their
game. Christian education on the other hand, teaches the young about their role in the
society as children of God, and also, as shepherds of His herd.

I also agree with the essence of the integration of Human and Christian
education. I attended a catholic institution during high school. Prior to that, all I know is
that I should study well so that in the future, I can lead a good life, earning money. I
devoted my time learning at home, without having enough empathy and regard towards
others. I only learn and study for myself and my family. But after I was exposed to
Christian education, I realized a lot about our purpose as children of God. It also follow
that we share what we have to others, most especially to those who have less. Christian
education molded me in a way that I recognize that educating myself should not end at
self-serving purposes but should also be directed towards a greater purpose. Achieving
my dreams through education found another color, and that is pursuing my dreams in
order to serve others more.

My stay in De La Salle Lipa helped integrate these two faces of education and
instill it in my heart. I was one of the lucky students who were able to attend the
Lasallian Leadership Journey (L2J). It taught me the teachings and true purpose of St.
La Salle. More so, it enlightened us on how we should use the education we acquire
from the school in order to help others. Currently, I dream to be a lawyer. Sometimes, I
tend to think of giving up or questioning myself if I can actually make it. But now that I
realize that when I become a lawyer in the future, I would be in a position where I can
better help others, especially in preserving and defending their rights to life, liberty, and
property. My dream is no longer confined for my own welfare but it is more focused on
what I can do better and what greater purpose I can fulfill. My strength now not only lies
with my will to have a better life, but to be a citizen who can offer more to society. As I
quote my previous professor, Judge Pam, “ Help others believe in the judicial system
once again”, and that as future lawyers, “ Aim to change the world for the better, one
case at a time.” All these, I will be able to achieve, through the Lasallian education I
currently enjoy.
