Tree Planting Evaluation

The online questionnaire gathered opinions from 21 participants in the City of Koronadal's Tree Planting Festival. Most participants found the program leaders knowledgeable and were satisfied with safety instructions. All participants gained knowledge about the city's urban forestry. Suggestions for improvement included maintaining planted trees, deeper planting holes, assigning tree care after planting, and conducting evaluations of seedling mortality and activity effectiveness. The conclusion was that the festival needs improvement, and utilizing participant recommendations could help community members see tree planting as an ongoing community effort.

The following shows the suggestions, comments, and recommendations of the respondents
for the improvement of the Koronadal City's Annual Tree Growing Festival.
1. It must not only be growing but maintaining it, many of the trees does not actually grow
as we wanted for it to grow, but sadly many of it die. Therefore, the government must
adhere the need of maintaining the growth of this grown trees.
2. There should be evaluations made every after tree planting activity so that the festival
would be improved annually.
3. In-charge should consider the soil and choose the right site. I have also observed that
the hole prepared was not that deep enough for the seedlings.
4. Tools should be given for the proper planting of seedlings. Since in reality, we were only
given seedlings to just put in the holes prepared and cover it again with soil, not knowing
whether what we did was correct or not.
5. We did not observe that long term evaluation methods were being used
6. Make sure that there must be a good soil in the selected area for the plants to grow and
maybe we could plant, instead of mahogany or Narra, maybe "Made De Cacao could be
an option to plant, since it still grows though one may cut it for some uses.
7. Hoped we could plant other kinds of trees such as pine trees along the national roads.
8. Maintenance should be made for public planting sites. There should be at least one
assigned to take care of the planted trees because I think none is given.
9. More guides should be provided for the safety of the participants.
10. There must be a monthly visitation in order to check from time to time the
seedlings/plants in the areas.
11. Participation was low among business owners, developers, and the ordinary community
members but was high among community leaders and schools
12. Suggesting that investment in mulching or training the community to mulch will yield
improvements to tree success.
13. Plant small trees (that reach 30 feet tall or less) at least 10 feet from your home’s
foundation and utility lines. Plant large trees (30 to 70 feet tall) at least 15 feet from
foundations and lines; give 70-foot trees 20 feet of distance.
14. Keep up the good work.
15. Start planting at 3pm (as shadows are cast and as transpiration rate slows).
16. Planting in groups is much more fun and makes for more efficient work. Assign each one
to a specific task (i.e. diggers, planters, stakers, water bearers) and rotate the tasks
every so often so that everyone gets to try out actual planting.
17. I think it is better to stake your saplings. Always mark your newly planted saplings with 2-
4 stakes. The larger (the more conspicuous) the better, so as to ensure these are not
accidentally trampled upon or cut.
18. I suggest that Take a photo of the newly planted saplings and note its height, date of
planting and the name of the planter.
19. It is good to make an area mapindicating what you planted where and keep an inventory
of your trees. This will help you monitor their survival and growth. You may also want to
track their growth by occasionally measuring and noting their height.
20. We need trees. They absorb carbon dioxide, produce shade and shelter for animals,
regulate heat by evaporation, and help break up the harshness of our cities of concrete
and asphalt. But also try to plant regional appropriate trees that work well around
architecture, civil structures, and don’t create a nuisance with smell, heavy droppings,
etc. Aim for long term trees that hold a great deal of appeal as they grow instead of fast
growing and fast dying trees that don’t last.
21. When you plant a tree, you are planting for the future. With other types of plants we do
not have to be so concerned about doing it correctly as they are not so difficult to move.
With a tree the placement is so important as most of us do not live on a large property.

Despite the variety of sites and conditions that were found, there was no indication that
any of the communities had a plan to evaluate their success or progress. No monitoring or after-
activity evaluation to measure the mortality of seedlings planted or the effectiveness of the
activity. From the findings above, it could be concluded that the City of Koronadal's Tree
Planting Festival is in need of improvement, hence, the necessity of the activity's policy review.
Utilizing these recommendations could lead community members to view tree planting project
as more than just planting trees but as an opportunity to work together to improve their
community while helping the environment.
