4.3 Chain Growth and Step Growth Polymerization PDF

Chain growth and step growth polymerization are two types of polymerization reactions. Chain growth polymerization, also called addition polymerization, involves the self-addition of unsaturated monomers without the elimination of byproducts to form linear polymers. Step growth polymerization, also called condensation polymerization, involves the reaction between polar groups on monomers with the elimination of small molecules like water or ammonia to form either linear or cross-linked polymers.

CHAIN GROWTH AND STEP GROWTH POLYMERIZATION
Types of Polymerization: The chemical reaction by which the monomers are combined to form polymers is called
polymerization. Polymerization reactions are of three types
1. Chain growth Polymerization (or) Addition Polymerization
2. Step growth Polymerization (or) Condensation Polymerization
3. Co-polymerization
4. Coordination (stereo specific) polymerization
1. Chain growth Polymerization (or) Addition Polymerization: Formation of a polymer by self-addition of large
number of unsaturated monomers without the elimination of any byproducts is called Addition polymerization.
This is also called as Chain growth Polymerization
Characteristics
1. The produced polymer contains the same elemental composition as that of the monomer.
2. The monomers containing double bonds generally undergo addition polymerization.
3. The molecular weight of polymer is an integral multiple of the monomer.
4. Linear polymers are produced. These reactions are rapid and exothermic.
5. The mechanism includes three steps initiation, propagation and termination

2. Step growth Polymerization (or) Condensation Polymerization: Formation of a polymer by reaction between
the same or different polar groups containing monomers with the elimination of small molecules like H2O, HCl and
NH3 is called Condensation Polymerization. This is also called as Step growth polymerization.
Characteristics
1. Linear or cross linked polymers are formed.
2. Produced polymer has fewer atoms than the monomer.
3. The molecular weight of the polymer is not an integral multiple of the molecular weight of monomer.
4. Bifunctional monomers form linear polymers and trifunctional or polyfunctional monomers form cross-
linked polymers
