FAQ FOR CHATHAM HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOME

APPLICATIONS

 Are the homes built by Habitat completely free for the receiving family?
o No, but they are highly affordable because of generous
donations and the costs we save on labor. Homes can be
purchased by local families for a 0% 20-30 year mortgage.
 How much does a Chatham Habitat house cost?
o It depends on the housing market, but in Pittsboro a home will
typically cost $175,000 while in Siler City a home will typically
cost about $125,000
 How does Chatham Habitat factor sustainability into building homes?
o We’re highly dedicated to making our homes as
environmentally-friendly as possible and use materials that
conserve energy or increase energy efficiency in our homes.
After all, part of what makes a home affordable is low monthly
utility bills. We’re also beginning to install electric vehicle
charging ports into new homes.
 How much will utilities cost?
o Because of our sustainable building practices, we guarantee
families that their heating and cooling costs will not exceed $35
per month for the first two years.
 Is there a down payment?
o No! We just require families put in 350 hours of “sweat equity”
by helping build their home and neighborhood homes as well as
attend homebuyer education classes. Friends and extended
family can help you reach that 350-hour requirement.
 How do families qualify?
o Your family must earn between 25% and 60% of median income
in Chatham County ($21,200-$51,800 in 2020) and have 2 years
of verified income.
 How long does the application process take?
o The process usually takes between two to five months.
