Need for the Program
Special Olympics is an organization that works to create inclusive programs to
allow individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate in
competitive sports. The Mentorship Cheer Camp Program incorporates the
standards of Special Olympics with service and community by promoting the use
of volunteers from local high schools. This program offers children with
intellectual disabilities the opportunity to feel included, learn new skills, and build
social bonds. It offers teens in local cheer programs the opportunity to learn the
importance of creating an inclusive community and gain confidence in their own
capabilities as well. This program’s key objective is to create a social change
within the community, end discrimination, and social isolation and injustice for
people with intellectual disabilities.
