The scene starts with a woman in black walking on the beach right by the sea during
what appears to be a sunset which is beautiful, this scene was shot with a wide
angled long shot this was used so that the woman is kept as the main focus of the
scene but also gives off the vibes that she is calm and gentile like the sea. But in this
scene it is also hard to see what she looks like creating mystery around her.

The video then cuts to a scene of Kendrick at the same beach as the woman but
looks as though he is looking for her, which could reflect on how he has a fiancée
that he knows loves him for him, here you will see the same kind of shot as what was
shown earlier a wide angled long shot, I feel like this was done by the director to
create an effect of trust.

The video then shows a scene of the woman more clearly walking away with the
camera using shallow focus on her in a mid-shot, this makes it seem as though he is
losing her, as if she was just barely out of his reach. This scene uses a mid-shot and
puts her at the far right of the screen to show that she is getting further and further
away, with the main focus of the scene being on her.

The next scene shows Kendrick walking the distance across the beach but then
there is a straight cut to a small scene with a lot of women, here you can see an
extreme long shot, a straight cut and the camera slightly panning to the left when on
the women, this happens twice and can be seen as though he knows that there are
all these other women but the woman in the black is his main focus. The shots at the
beach appear to be taken with low ISO to make the sunset look more dominant for
lighting and look clearer and set a tone of romance.

The scene then cuts to Kendrick and one woman sitting at a dining table then she
get up and takes of her shirt and Kendrick picks her up and puts her on the table and
they start kissing, then it cuts to Kendrick laughing with the same woman he kissed,
then the camera starts with a mid-shot of her unhappy then she leaves, then cuts to
them fighting and finally Kendrick drinking alcohol by himself and fades away
throughout this sequence of Kendrick’s relationship’s ups and downs, the camera
always used the same motion of slowly zooming out away from the subjects, far
enough to move to the next scene in the sequence. I think this creates a sense of
realism and shows how the relationship with her was great at the start but gradually
got worse.

The video shows a scene of her appearing in different ways multiple times and this
was done in low ISO, a sepia tone and had her fade away multiple times, this create
the atmosphere of a memory because they used the camera techniques to make her
appear as a memory or memories which connotes that she is on his mind and he
sees her as beautiful.
He then is scene with all the women from earlier in the video, this was done with a
mid-shot and the camera panning to the left, these angles were chosen to suggest
these women are his previous companions and mirrors the lyrics as he says “I
wanna be with you” suggesting that he is choosing her over everyone else. In the
next scene he is in a car with Zacari (who sings in the song) who we can assume is
going through the same thing. Here we get another sequence that shows them in the
car, at stairs with shallow focus on Kendrick, Kendrick at her bedside and like a time-
lapse of what seems to be their journey to her house. I think that they used multiple
two shots so they can introduce Zacari and so he could help Kendrick come to the
conclusion to go to her house.

Later on in the video Kendrick is with her again and she is doing his hair and the
scene is brighter than the rest of the whole video, which could suggest that they are
a lot happier now and that is reflected by the deep focus and what could be higher
ISO or just glare on the lens. This gives off the effect of purity and looks as though
their relationship is purer after their breakup, which shows love.

At the very end of the video you see Kendrick walk up to her door step and she
opens the door and lets him in, this is done with a long shot and the shot allows the
viewer to soak in the fact that after everything they went through they got back
together.
