Force Theory: This theory involving one group forcibly taking over the area of another group.

Historians and Anthropologists who support this theory argue that violence is a natural

component to humans. This can be observed in the behavior of chimpanzees, who closely mirror

human development, that frequently attack and conquer each other for resources. When

examining the development of States, only the strongest survived. Force Theory firmly believes

that humans are inherently violent and cannot work together without fighting.

Evolutionary Theory: This theory argues that large extended families formed the first States.

Historians and Anthropologists who argue this theory believe that families with a unifying

individual, like a grandparent or a powerful family member, created the first bands. Large

families with multiple generations can have a lot of people with a close bond. Once these

families settled with other large families, they eventually became States.

Divine Right Theory: This theory argues that the rulers were given the right to rule by a higher

power. Historians and Anthropologists argued that the leaders had received blessings from their

God or higher power. Each individual had specific skills meant to help the collective (other

people), with the ruler being chosen to lead. Throughout history, multiple leaders have

proclaimed their divine right to rule or proven to by some other means.

Social Contract Theory: This theory argues that the people determine the power given to their

leaders through a form of negotiation and contract. Historians and Anthropologists argue that

humans will work with each other to reach a common goal if a contract between the rulers and

people is reached. This can be observed in Bonobos (another type of ape related to chimps) who

are known for working together. The leader rules on behalf of their citizens and the rulers can be

removed if they fail to do so.
