What is faith

Hope is a critical component of faith, but hope is not

faith. It is less than 25% of what constitutes faith.

Hope: house rent

Substance: promise by rich man

Not seen: Take actions in line with the hope (pay the
rent). James 2:17-18 (Go to the bank or bring out your
phone to transfer).

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the

evidence of things not seen.

(a) Substance: (hypostasis)…hypo (under

beneath)…stasis ( a standing structure)

a setting under (not seen but holding things up),

assurance (insurance… II Tim 1:12; Judges 16:19-
20).

hypostases: something that settles at the bottom

of a fluid. Meditation.

(b) Hope: Elpizo…. to wait for salvation with joy and

full confidence. Job 14:14 Luke 24:21……Hebrews
4:9…Philippians 4:6-7….when you are in faith,
your changes start inwardout. When you are not
in faith, your changes start outward in Matt
14:30; Acts 20:9-12.

He who prays while others are sleeping will be the

one that will be able to sleep in the storm.

(c) Evidence: substance is the real deal. Evidence

supports substance. (elenchos). A proof, possibly:
a persuasion…exploits of the man/alerts on your
phone.

(d) Not seen:

Mark 11:24

Desire comes before prayer if your prayer will be effective.

Desire is hope.

It is in the believe of what God has said that you

substantiate your desire. You cant believe outside of God’s
word.

Receive: evidence

Have: Things not seen become seen.

Evidences are generated in the place of prayer

is able to do.

V 28: Substance: angelic declaration

V29: hypostases: let it settle down well in meditation

V34: Evidence: Exodus 3:13…What is the evidence of the

burning bush?

This is the cycle of faith

Example 2: Jesus: Matt 26:36

Hope: That the cup will pass over him

Substance: His purpose was to die

Evidence: No response from heaven

Not seen: Ready to go and die

Hope: That it will rain

Look at the Galatians church… Galatian 3

- He exists: Matthew 6:1-6; Romans 12:19; Psalm 75:6-7;

I Chr 29:12-13; Genesis 14:22…this is why you will not
collect bribe or offer your body for money

Rewarder: Paul said did I fought animals at Ephesus

for nothing.

Faith is about being intentional with life. You are

deliberate.

- Our way of life: Habakkuk 2:4 (Gen 27:40; Matt 26:26);

Romans 14:23.

- The determinant of our fate: Matthew 9:29…Ephesians

3:20.

- The equalizer: same God is rich….whosoever can have

whatsoever. Woman with the issue of blood came
from behind.

- The definition of our heritage: Galatians 3:9; Isaiah

51:2;

- Our establishment factor and competitive advantage

Acts 16:5; Colossians 2:7; Romans 3:22; 27.
 - The means by which the possibilities of God can be
expressed through us Ephesians 3:17…eternity in the
hearts of men…men are groaning.

- God’s way of working: Romans 3:3….if it doesn’t work,

you are not in faith.

Why the repetition? Not the only subject in the bible but
the most important subject in the bible. Matt 23:23;
Ephesians 6:16.

What can happen to faith

- Faith can fail
- Faith can grow: Romans 1:17; Acts 6:5;8
- Faith can be tried.. I Peter 1:7
- Faith can be followed Romans 1:8

Different types of faith

There is a measure of faith for every man that comes to

Christ Romans 12:3…it is as we walk in this that we grow
Colossians 2:6.

- No faith: Matt 17:17 ….fear tolerated is faith

contaminated Mark 4:40; John 20:27
 - Little faith: Matt 6:30….Cannot take a cue from what
is visible (Isaiah 49:15).

Yet to renew mind to abundance of what is available in

Christ Luke 12:28

Faith that is fearful: Matt 8:26..

Faith that doubts: Matthew 14:31

Faith that relies more on the physical Matt 16:8

Little faith does not refer to the size of the faith (Matt
17:20)….Luke 17:5

- Weak faith: Romans 14:1

Operating at a low level of knowledge. True but not the

whole truth Acts 18:25; Acts 19:3.

- Great: Matthew 8:10

Mechanism of faith

- The origin of faith: The pathway of faith takes its

reference from grace Romans 12:6; 5:2. Ephesians 2:8;
Acts 3:16. It is better to have a small faith in a big
God…prophets of Baal.

Promise before faith Galatians 3:14

Titus 2:11…When faith is not activated, it seems as if

grace is not available. But grace is always available.
 Every grace provision comes with a faith requirement
to enjoy it.

The focus of our faith is Christ Acts 20:21

- The character of faith: Faith is personal but not

private…Matt 9:22…Ephesians 1:15.

- The recognition of faith: Faith is visible: Matthew 9:2;

Matthew 16:8; every valid faith will have a
corresponding action. Acts 14:9

- Love: the habitat of faith…Galatian 5:6…men

commended for great faith didn’t use the faith for
themselves.

- The atmosphere of faith: Proverbs 27:17; Jonah 2:8;

Matthew 9:25; Acts 9:40. Jesus expected his presence
to rub off on them Matt 17:17.

- The law of faith: sound before sight….II Cor 4:13;

Galatians 3:5-9; Faith is released by words (Matt
17:20)….Acts 14:9…Romans 10:6.

- The law of use: Luke 17:7

Basis of faith
- Finished works of Christ: I Cor 15:18; Romans 5:2.
Access to grace is by faith.

- Word of God: I Cor 2:5

- Righteousness: Romans 1:17; Romans 4
