6. A culture of bacteria doubles every three hours. The initial culture contains 500
bacteria.
a) How many bacteria will be there after 27 hours?
𝑡
𝐴 = 𝐼 (2)𝑑

-There is a horizontal asymptote at y=0 1
graph of y= (4)𝑥 decreases
-The y-intercepts are both (0,1)
-There are no maximum or minimum points -The graph are reflections of each other in the
y-axis
-The domain is all real numbers
-The range is all real numbers greater than 0 -The bases in the equations are reciprocals

Task 3: Communication questions

8. Explain the difference between the exponential form, the radical form and the
logarithmic form of an equation and give an example of each.
Exponential form: is a numeric form including powers.
3
Radical form: is expressing in the simplest radical form. Example, √4
Logarithmic form: is another way to write an exponent.
9. Define a common logarithm
A common logarithm is a logarithm to the base of 10, written as log or log 10
10. A fellow classmate is having difficulty solving the following expression involving
logarithms. List the steps you would take to solve for x.
log 3 9 + log 3 2𝑥 2 = log 3 162
First step: is to move log 3 162 to the left and the 𝑥 2 to the right, the equation
should look like this: log 3 9 + log 3 2 + log 3 162 = 𝑥 2
Second step: is to use the law of logarithms for multiplication, which means that
when the base of the logarithm is the same for all and it is an addition, then the
powers are multiplied, the equation should now look like this: log 3 (9 × 2 × 162) =
𝑥2
Third step: is to solve what is inside the brackets, the equation will look like this,
log 3 2916 = 𝑥 2
Fourth step: is to solve for log and then get rid of the exponent and by that it must
be moved to the left which converts into square root. The equation should now look
like this, √7.2618 = 𝑥
Fifth step: is to solve what is on the left side and since the x value is now isolated,
the answer will be the result of the square root. Round to the nearest number and
your solution should look like this, 2.69 = 𝑥 , rounded to the nearest number:𝑥 = 3
11. Use equation editor to correctly type and evaluate the expression: common log of
9
the square root of . Round your answer to two decimals places

Task 4: application questions
12. The pH of a coffee is 5.2 and the pH of orange juice is 4.4. how many times more
acidic is orange juice than coffee? Round the answer to one decimal place.
Coffee: Juice:
+
𝑝𝐻 = − log[𝐻 ] 𝑝𝐻 = − log[𝐻 + ]
5.2 = − log[𝐻 + ] 4.4 = − log[𝐻 + ]
−5.2 = log[𝐻+ ] −4.4 = log[𝐻 + ]
+
[𝐻 ] = 10 −5.2 [𝐻 + ] = 10−4.4
[𝐻+ ] = 6.3 × 10−6 mol/L [𝐻 + ] = 4.0 × 10−5 mol/L

4.0 × 10−5 𝑚𝑜𝑙/𝐿

= 6.3 𝑚𝑜𝑙/𝐿
6.3 × 10−6 𝑚𝑜𝑙/𝐿
Juice is 6.3 mol/L more acidic than coffee.
13. The intensity of the sound of a jet engine is 140 dB, while the intensity of the sound
of a motorcycle is 100 dB. How many times louder is the jet engine than the
motorcycle?
Jet engine: Motorcycle:
𝐼 𝐼
10log (𝐼1 ) = 140 10log (𝐼2 ) = 100
0 0

𝐼 𝐼
log ( 1 ) = 14 log ( 2 ) = 10
𝐼0 𝐼0

𝐼 𝐼
(𝐼1 ) = 1014 (𝐼2 ) = 1010
0 0

𝐼1 = 𝐼0 × 1014 𝐼2 = 𝐼0 × 1010

𝐼1 𝐼0 × 1014
= = 1014−10
𝐼2 𝐼0 × 1010

= 104
= 10000
A jet engine is 10000 times louder than a motorcycle.

14. A new car worth $18 000 depreciates at a rate of 8% per year. Round your answers
for the following questions to the nearest whole number.
a) What will the car be worth after four years?
𝐴 = 𝑃(1 + 𝑖)𝑛
𝐴 = 18000(1 − 0.08)4
= 18000(0.92)4
= 18000(0.72)
= 12895.08
The car will be worth $12 895 after four years.
b) When will the car be worth half of its value?
𝐴 = 𝑃(1 − 𝑖)𝑛
9000 = 18000(1 − 0.08)𝑛
9000
= (0.092)𝑛
18000
0.50 = (0.92)𝑛
log 0.92𝑛 = log 0.50
nlog 0.92 = log 0.50
log 0.50
𝑛=
log 0.92
𝑛 = 8.31 it will take the car 8 years to be worth half of its value.
