Terms and Names

1. Richard M. Nixon: He was the 37th U.S. President most famous for the Vietnam War and the
Watergate scandal, which cause him to be the only president in the history to ever resign to
avoid being removed.

2. Stagflation: the state that the economy face a combination of slow growing, high inflation and
high unemployment.

3. OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries): A cartel contain Middle East country
that produce oil for the US, which was one of the cause of stagflation.

4. SALT I Treaty: Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. This was a five-year agreement of the US and the
Soviet to limite the number of intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarines-launched
missiles.

5. Watergate: 5 men of the Nixon administration tried to break in the Democratic office in the
Watergate building.Nixon failed at covering the scandal and end up resigned to avoid remove
from the office.

6. Saturday Night Massacre: it was a series in event in the Watergate scandal, in which many
people have been fired and resign in attempt of Nixon to cover up the case.
7. Camp David Accords: A peace agreement was sign between Israel and Egypt there.

8. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini: He was a Muslim leader led the Iran Revolution, overthrew the
last Shah of Iran.

9. Rachel Carson: She was the author of Silent Spring, a book about the dangerous of using
pesticide.

10. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): This is the agency of the federal government set to
protect human and environmental health, but mostly to help Nixon look better in the public.
Main Ideas
1. Nixon plan to accompish the New Federalism by distribute its power to state and local
government. He also expand programs that he saw working such as social security, Medicar,
Medicaid, and food stamps.

2. Nixon raised taxes and cut the budget but face opposition from the Congress. Nixon also
attempt to reduce the amount of money circulating by increasing interest rates but did not do
much but slow down the economy.

3. Nixon’s staff stop the FBI and CIA from investigating on grounds of national security and bribed
the five men so they quiet.

4. Nixon had to resign in order to avoid being remove from office.

5. It was the Camp David Accords, where he got Egypt and Isreal to sign a peace agreement.

6. He ask people to cut down on oil and gas. Then there was the National Energy Act, which eased
the US dependence on foreign oil.

7. The issues raise people concern and also make people more aware of how to use environment
resource as they are not unlimited.

8. The incident cause the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to strengthen its safety standards and
improved its inspection procedures. Its also cause the debate over nuclear energy even greater.

other until 1978, where they both start to rise significantly.
