Unit 4: Weeks 1 and 2 Reading Centers

Listen to Reading
Students will use the computers to independently listen to the
stories previously read in class. Students can, also, choose a story
to listen and read on Epic. This is a great way for students to
listen to fluent reading and study for their upcoming test on the
stories read in class!

Word Work
Students will work on vocabulary independently or in pairs by
using the paper protectors, dry erase markers, and worksheets.
Students can choose between three worksheets provided. They can
work on synonym matching, antonym matching, or creating
sentences with the vocabulary words. The vocabulary words are
their current words and their past words.

Skill Work
Students will work in a group to play the board game “Cause
and Effect.” They will take turns reading prompts and answering
questions that are about causes and effects in the prompt. If the
person whose turn it is answers correctly, they will move their
board game piece. Whoever gets to the top of the tower first wins!
If a student wants to work independently, they can choose to work
independently on finding the cause and/or effect in prompts
provided on a separate worksheet in the bin. This allows students
to work on the skill for this week.

Read to Self
Students will choose a book from the classroom library or
school library to read to themselves silently. They should log on
their reading log how long they read, the pages they read, the title,
author, genre, and details from the book.

Read to Someone
Students will choose a story prompt provided or a book from
the science text set to read with a partner. Partners should take
turns reading the story aloud. After each prompt or story,
students should ask each other the comprehension questions
provided. If it was a nonfiction story, choose the nonfiction
questions. If it was a fiction story, choose the fiction questions.

Writing
Students will write a “book talk” about a book they recently
finished or about a book they are currently reading. They should
follow the graphic organizer to write their book talk. Then, they
should write it in paragraph form. Students should finish their
Cinquain poem first if they did not finish it previously.

Guided Reading with Teacher

Guided reading groups will be called independently to come to
the back table to work with the teacher on their book of the week.
During reading centers, the teacher will meet with three groups.
The teacher will follow the separate lesson plan for each group
pulled back.
