Elephant
Among all animals, only the elephant has such a distinctive nose as the
trunk. The trunk is primarily a nose for breathing. It also acts as a nose
which is capable of sucking and blowing liquids when drinking and
showering, and to collect dust to blow over the body. No other mammal
can use its nose in such a similar manner.
The trunk can also be used as a trumpet. It can be used to tear up glass,
remove the dirt from the root and bring it to the elephant’s mouth. The
elephant uses its trunk to select fruits, break off branches and lift huge
logs. Elephants can also dig in sandy river beds with their trunks to get
water.
The white horn-like things protruding out of the elephant’s mouth are
its tusks. A baby elephant has milk tusks which fall out when it is one
year old. They continue to grow throughout an elephant’s life, which
means that the bigger the tusks, the older the elephant. The tusks are
used mainly as tools although they are sometimes used as weapon by
the elephant.
The rest of the elephant’s teeth are also remarkable. Elephants are
completely vegetarians. Like cows, horses and sheep, they grind
vegetation, so it can be digested easily.
Smell is the most highly developed sense of the elephant. Elephants
pick up surrounding scents on the breeze. If the scent disturbs them, they
raise their trunks and point the tips in that direction.
