UNFREEZING
Name of Organization: St. John’s Bosco Orphanage

Intervention: A Needs Assessment was conducted after the group’s initial visit to the
orphanage; it was highlighted by the Administrator and Assistant Administrator that the boys are
in ‘desperate need’ of counselling to facilitate the transitional stage of adolescence. The target
population will consist of adolescent boys from the age of twelve (12) to sixteen years (16).
Moreover, there will be sessions that will consist of anger management training, sexuality
exploration, dating/courtship, drugs, etiquette, capacity building and morally accepted societal
behaviours.

(i) Reasons for Intervention:

 To assist the staff who are predominantly females with the aid of external specialized
personnel
 To instill the required knowledge for the various psychological, physical and
psychosocial changes occurring during this stage.
 To implore upon them the importance of becoming respectable, decent and proactive men
of society

(ii) Candidates desire for change

A brief meeting was conducted with the administration of the St. John’s Bosco Orphanage
seeking permission to conduct our practicum needed for the fulfilment of our Bachelor’s Degree
(Social Work) at the University of Guyana under the guidance of the lecturer, Ms. Avonel
Corrica. Verbal approval was given for the initial meeting to be carried out with the participants
on Wednesday March 4th, 2020.

On Wednesday March 4th, 2020, the group briefly conducted the aforementioned meeting
with the boys stating our purpose and the duration of the program. It was emphasized, that these
sessions will not only be verbal discussions but physical activities as well. During this meeting

the participants were made aware of various boundaries that must be enforced and followed in
order for session to be successful and effective.

Moreover, members of group observed the prospective candidates’ non-verbal cues that
indicated signs of enthusiasm, attentiveness, and their willingness to participate. This is our
current status which is a work in progress.

(iii) Examination of motives

 Plan mind stimulating activities which increase problem-solving and creativity.

 Give appropriate incentives- Incentives are tangible or intangible rewards used to

motivate a person or group to behave in a certain way. Incentives may promote program
attendance and a sense of belonging to a program.

 Encourage self-reflection

 Use positive competition

 Change scenery

 Give participants a sense of control

WEIGHING OF FORCES AND ALTERNATIVES

 The group will strategize solutions to address these challenges, which will include fun
activities geared towards the management of attention span and reluctance, alongside
snacks.
 The Board of Directors should make an assessment of the participants that they will
encounter and condition their expectation to a more realistic outcome seeing things for
what they are and tackling challenges as they arise.
 A partnership with skilled personnel will be established to aide in the delivery and
success of this intervention. However, if any partnership is breached as a result of
unforeseen circumstances, a proxy will be in place.

DEFINITION OF GOALS SET

 To empower and mould young boys-

‘To empower someone means to give them the means to achieve something’; this
Association will be no different as such we will aide in the strife to see these boys
become successful young men in all aspects. This can be achieved through lectures and
empowerment sessions.

 To enhance morally accepted societal attitudes-

‘Morals are standards of behaviour; principles of right and wrong’. This
Association will reinforce these behaviours that are morally accepted by society. Which
will be achieve through lectures and empowerment sessions.

 To aide in the academic performance and promote upward mobility among male
adolescence-

Notwithstanding the fact that our target population are school aged boys, the
Association will assist these boys in achieving their academic goals; which in turn
enhances their applicability in reaching future goals/milestones. This will be achieved
through tutoring sessions.

 To teach skills that can aide in alternative career decisions/choices-

Since the educational systems such as the schools do not often provide for
alternative career choices, hence this association will seek to teach skills such as cooking,
craft among others which will create avenues, for these boys, towards becoming future
business entrepreneurs as an alternative.

 To create a safe environment for the target population to express themselves freely
Socialization has created a severe negative impact which causes the inability of
males among all ages to freely express themselves. As such the Association will create a
safe environment while adhering to the codes of ethics guidelines by the National
Association of Social Workers (NASW), so that these boys can learn to openly and
comfortably express themselves. This can be achieved through group counselling.

EVALUATION OF THE PROCESS

In order to evaluate the program and its effectiveness on its participants the Gentleman in
Disguise Association has decided to compile an evaluation form that will be used after each
session. This will be given to each participant with the aim of gaining their responses on the
sessions in the aspect of; how informative it was, if they learn anything new, how they felt about
the activity and if they would like to do the activity again. In doing this after every session the
facilitators would have a better idea of what peaks their interest and what they need to be better
informed about.
