MODULE 3
UNIT 1– LEADERSHIP IN RECREATION
Overview:
Way back in the history of mankind leadership existed among the primitive people.
They made a remarkable discovery that enemies were successfully detected when they
joined others in cooperative effort rather than fight alone. This was how leadership began
among men because whenever man with a common purpose worked together a leader
emerged.
Leadership can only be effective if it understands its very important function at a
given time. The leader of today is not the leader of yesterday nor is he an exact forecast of
the recreation leader of tomorrow. The nature of recreation leadership alters with the
changing society.

Objectives:
 Recognize the primary role of a recreation leader as a community leader and describe
the implications.
 Identify the competencies of an effective community recreation leader.
 Recognize the importance of self-care and the resources available to support oneself
in a work environment.

I. LEADERSHIP IN RECREATION
Leadership according to HOWARD DANFORD (1974) is a process of stimulating and
aiding groups to determine or to accept common goals and to carry out effectively the
measures leading to the attainment of these goals. In other words of leadership is where a
person does to help a group decide upon common goals and then achieve them.

 A Leader is a person who exerts special influence over a number of people.


 A Recreation leader is a person who exerts a number of functions in a group in
planning and executing the overall program of recreational activity.

II. TYPES OF RECREATION LEADER


The National Recreation Association listed the following six titles and their functions:

1. SUPERINTENDENT – He is the chief executive officer in charge of a department or


division and its personnel. The superintendent is usually responsible to the board or
commission and sometimes to the mayor or city council.
2. GENERAL SUPERVISOR OR GROUPS OF RECREATION CENTERS – he is in-
charge of the center personnel and the general program of activities. His special
function is to supervise parks, playgrounds, their construction and maintenance.
3. DIRECTOR AND MANAGERS OF CENTERS – these people are in-charge of the
staffs and administration of facilities and program of activities on playground,
community centers, camp, swimming pools, bathing beaches and golf courses.
4. SUPERVISORS AND DIRECTORS OF SPECIAL ACTIVITIES – he supervises or
directs athletics music, arts, nature study, dancing and craft. He has varying degrees
of responsibilities for these specialties.
5. PLAY LEADER – he exercises general oversight over the play of children and/or of
adults in recreation centers, he directs organized group activities.
6. RECREATION SPECIALTIES – there are experts in various fields of sports, dances,
gymnastics and craft projects.

III. FUNCTIONS OF RECREATION LEADERS


1. Organization and administrative of recreation centers
The leader has increasing functions of organizing and administrating
recreation centers including promotional and public relations work. He pays
attention to the details of management.

2. Direction and supervising of activities


Leadership in this sense means directing and supervising various kinds of
pursuits. As a director of those who desire to lead people in recreational activities.
He must have the knowledge of the activities and be able to direct people in the
performance of these activities.
3. Instruction

The leader teaches people how to play, demonstrate what can be done to
have a good time, trains them to acquire skills in a variety of leisure activities and
coaches then to become proficient in certain games and sports.

4. Guidance in the selection of activities


The leader stimulates people to become interested in various forms of leisure
pursuits which are most beneficial to them. He helps them look into each
individual’s problem with reference to his capacity and shortcomings.
From practical angle of leadership, the work includes specific tasks of:

 Planning the program


 Organizing services and supplying materials
 Establishing schedules
 Setting up standards and rules of the game
 Diminishing moral hazards and creating pleasant environmental condition
 Preventing conflicts and maintaining order
 Increasing the attendance through publicity
 Looking after mechanical and administrative details
 Evaluating of programs, services and facilities
 Stimulating public relations
 Soliciting and exploring financial and legislative support
 Representing office with related interests, agencies and organization

IV. QUALIFICATION AND PROFESSIONAL TRAINING OF A


RECREATION LEADER

A. Desirable qualities of personalities


1. A robust and healthy physique, physical energy and vitality and a pleasing
appearance are of importance to leadership in recreation.
2. Intelligence, mental alertness and a fund of knowledge enable one to think
quickly and closely, and aid one in rendering sound judgement.
3. Wholesome temperament and disposition and well controlled emotional
responses are essential leadership qualities.
4. Good character is important for the recreation leader because of the intimate
relationship between the leader and the group.
5. Ability to express oneself enables the leader to get things done.
6. He has confidence. A leader’s conception of himself and of his roles in the social
group condition his success.

VI. METHODS OF LEADERSHIP


The professional recreation leader exercises his leadership function in a variety
of settings and through diverse methods. Agency purposes policy, and resources combine
to condition the methods used. Among the most commonly utilized methods are the
following:

1. Mass method - the leadership utilizes the mass leadership method in working with
large groups generally composed of both sexes and various groups. It consists of
leadership by one or few individuals of large groups participating in a single activity.

2. Unit method – as alternate to the mass method of dealing with large groups is to
divide the groups into several smaller groups based on homogenous factors such as
age, sex, interest, weight, degree of skills in a particular activity.

3. Special or single interest group method – in this method the leader is commonly
known as the activity leader. Slavson (1946) writes: the leader is first and most
sought-after person. It is to him that the participants turn to for help and guidance
and he must be equipped for this role.

4. Multiple interest group method – leadership method of this type is type is utilized
with clubs and groups organized primarily on the social drive interest where there is
varied interest group method.

5. Committee method – the committee plan is directly related to the primary objectives
of recreation, particularly those which seek to provides laboratory for democratic
living an opportunity for the development of self-leadership.
6. Individual method – this method has been used sparingly in recreation in the past,
but it is becoming increasingly more important. Recreation for handicapped and for
the hospitalized often must be approached on an individual basis.

7. Indirect method – the modern recreation leader must understand the community
organization aspects of recreation if he is to fulfill his proper function in the
community scene. Community organization work involves leadership methods.

VII. LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES


Principles are fundamental beliefs based on facts. They serve as guides to action or to
better understanding. Unfortunately, in many instances leaders have depended not upon
principles for the formation of judgements but upon such aids as tradition, current practices,
guess and authority, each of which may prove to be unsound.

The art of leadership, however, does not consist solely of memorizing a list of
principles and then applying them in a mechanical fashion. Leadership involves working
with human beings and human nature is a highly unpredictable element.

Leadership must be flexible, elastic and sensitive to the distinctive factors and
conditions characterizing each situation confronting it.

A knowledge of principles is indispensable to good leadership bit it must be


supplemented by sound judgement and common sense.

 PRINCIPLES:

1. Leadership must be based upon a sound philosophy of recreation.


2. Leadership is dedicated to the principle of involvement.
3. Leadership function in harmony with the principle of individual differences.
4. Compatibility must exist between means and ends.
5. The effectiveness of leadership is measured by the degree to which it attains its
goals.
6. Leadership accepts responsibilities and risks.
7. Extreme discrepancies between the intelligence of potential leaders and their
followers may be a problem in the exercise of leadership.
8. Leadership anticipates difficulties as they arise and acts to prevent them.
9. Leadership is based on continuous evaluation.
