Countdown

Growing up was not an easy experience. My brother was very ill and spent most of his time
in different hospitals. As a child, I remember not knowing much about why we spent our time in
hospitals. One vivid memory that hangs on till this day is the moment my brother had to get
surgery. There were many doctors present and they were all preparing to do what they loved the
most which was treating patients. I remember all I wanted to do was join them. This is where my
journey begins. Growing up all I ever wanted to do was help people. I used to help my teachers a
lot, help neighbors with moving, I even had to do CPR one time. Once high school begun I
signed up to do community work for community service hours and even did volunteer work for
the American Red Cross and Students Against Nicotine clubs. It wasn't until junior year when I
decided that nursing was the perfect career choice for me. During one of my experiences in the
American red cross there was a horrific injury that made everyone's stomachs turn except mine.
During that incident all I was thinking about was helping the injured person. When this
happened, I had an interest in surgery but after a few months of contemplating and figuring out if
becoming a surgeon was a choice, I learned that I do not do well working under pressure. So I
decided that I wanted to be available during surgery but as an anesthesiologist. My interest grew
larger and larger until I was convinced this was the career path I was going to take.

As of right now, I am working as a Patient Safety Attendant at a local hospital nearby. I do

some hands-on training only when necessary and I am with the patient at all times. My job is to
protect the patient and make sure they are safe. I take notes on the patient's behavior patterns,
what the patient consumes, what actions the patient takes and etc. I work part time and my shifts
are about 10 hours long. The days are long but nothing serious. I love this job because I get to
meet new people of all ages and everyone can be very kind. I learn something new every day
when I work. Most of the time the patients I get are sleeping and most sleep through my entire
shift so while they sleep, I study. My dream is to become a M.D Anesthesiologist. I attend a
community college, I am currently completing specific courses so I can join the nursing program.
The courses I have to take are a bit challenging so whenever I have time I pull out my textbook
and start studying. The nurses in the hospital all know me very well and are even educating me.
Whenever the patient needs a change or IV or even anything, the nurses keep me in the room so I
can observe and even maybe participate at times. That is what makes me fall in love with the
idea of becoming a nurse.

Some short term goals that I have are to pass all semesters with at least C's. Once I get that
done I can apply for the nursing program and my second goal is to get in. Once I join the
program, I can start hands on training and practicing with dummies. When I graduate from the
program or even before graduating, the program assigns shifts for those who are confident
enough to start with real life people. This means taking shifts at any chosen hospital and working
with actual nurses. My long term goal is to take the nursing path to get me to where I aspire to
be. Becoming a doctor has always been a dream of mine and the shortest route to get there is by
taking the nursing route. Once I get to go to medical school, I will feel like I can accomplish
anything and I'll be closer to where I want to be. I always dreamed of saying to my patients
