Introduction
Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been adopted by United Nations General
Assembly. These include: 1: No Poverty, 2: Zero Hunger, 3: Good Health and Well-being, 4: Quality
Education, 5: Gender Equality, 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, 7: Affordable and Clean, Energy, 8:
Decent Work and Economic Growth, 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, 10: Reduced
Inequality, 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, 12: Responsible Consumption and Production,
13: Climate Action, 14: Life Below Water, 15: Life on Land, 16: Peace and Justice Strong Institutions,
17: Partnerships to achieve the Goals. These Goals have specified 169 targets, to be achieved by all
counties by 2030.
India is fully committed to these SDGs. As Hon’ble Prime Minister has said, our own development
goals are fully aligned with SDGs. These SDGs cover almost all facets of economic and social
development, environment and quality of human life. In addition to the government effort, the
corporates, civil society and non-government organisations, associations and academic institutions
are expected to work towards achieving the SDGs. The policies, programmes and projects in the
country would contribute towards the SDGs and our own goals. Their effective formulation and
implementation is important to ensure the achievement of the SDGs.
It is in this context that the role of engineers assumes importance. Engineers can contribute firstly in
the formulation of the right policies, programmes and projects. Secondly, their implementation will
require the engineering and technological expertise and inputs. With the knowledge and skills of
latest technologies, engineers can access the data, analyse the goals and objectives to be achieved,
formulate strategies and set the targets. They can then formulate the programmes and projects to
achieve these. Lastly, engineers have very important role and ensuring effective implementation,
keeping in view the health, safety, quality and environment requirements.
Objectives
The main objective of the National Conference is to focus on the 'Role of Engineers in achieving
Sustainable Development Goals’, and discuss the role of engineers to help in achieving these, as far
as practicable. The problems and issues and effective solutions would also be highlighted. The
papers may be from industry stalwarts, practitioners, academicians & research scholars,
government officials and members of the professional associations of engineers and technologists.
