CONCEPT AND DEFINITION OF MOMENT OF INERTIA:

 The sum of second moment of all elementary areas about

Y-Y axis.

 Since the moment is taken about Y-Y axis, ∑ ax2 denotes

the moment of inertia of an area about Y-Y axis and is
denoted by IYY.

 Similarly, the sum of second moment of all elementary

areas about X-X axis.

 Since the moment is taken about X-X axis, ∑ ay2 denotes the moment of inertia of an area about X-X axis
and is denoted by IXX.

 The second moment of area about the axis is called moment of inertia of the area about that axis.

RADIUS OF GYRATION:
 The radius of gyration of a given area about any axis is that distance from the given axis at which the
entire area is assumed to be concentrated without changing the M.I. about the given axis.

PARALLEL AXIS THEOREM:

 It states, "The moment of inertia of a plane section about any axis parallel to the centroidal axis is equal
to the moment of inertia of the section about the centroidal axis plus the product of the area of the
section and the square of the distance between the two axes."
PERPENDICULAR AXIS THEOREM:
 It states, if IXX and IYY are the moments of inertia of a plane section about two perpendicular axis
meeting at O, then the moment of inertia IZZ about the axis Z-Z, perpendicular to the plane and passing
through the intersection of X-X and Y-Y is given by:

 The third axis Z-Z is called as polar axis. Therefore, this theorem
is also called as polar axis theorem.

 The moment of inertia IZZ , about the axis Z-Z is called as polar
moment of inertia (IP)
IP =IXX + IYY
