diameter bar, the following
observations were recorded for an
axial pull of 100 kN.
Elongation of 0.29 mm over 100mm
gauge length.
Reduction in diameter of 0.016mm.
Calculate Poisson’s ratio and
modulus of elasticity.

10. In a tri-axial stress system, the stresses along the three directions are σ x =100 N /mm2 (tensile),
σ y =60 N /mm2(tensile), σ z=30 N /mm2(compressive). Find the strain in each direction. Take
E=2× 105 N /mm2 and μ=0.25.
11. A rectangular block of size x=150mm, y=200mm and z=300mm is subjected to a tri-axial stress
system. The stresses in the three mutually perpendicular directions are are P x =900 N (tensile),
P y =1200 N (compressive), P z=1350 N (compressive). Find the net strain in each direction and
hence change in the volume of the block. Take E=200 k N /mm2 and m=3.
12. A rod 2.2m long. Find the expansion of the rod when temperature is raised to 70 oC from 10 oC. If
this expansion is prevented find the stress in material. Take E=1.2× 105 N /mm 2 and

stress in each material due to an axial thrust of 60kN.

16. A concrete column 300mm x 300mm is reinforced with 4bars of 20mm diameter and carries a load
of 400kN. The modular ratio is 15. Calculate the stress in steel and concrete. Also calculate the load
shared by each material.
17. A bar 20mm in diameter and 1000mm long is hung vertically and a collar is attached at the lower
end. A weight of 1000N falls through height of 250mm on the collar. Calculate the maximum
instantaneous stress, elongation and strain energy stored in a bar. E=2× 105 N /mm2
18. An unknown weight falls through 15mm on a collar rigidly attached at the lower end of vertical bar
4 meters long and 800 mm2 in area. If the maximum instantaneous elongation is measured to be
3mm, what is the corresponding stress and the value of unknown weight? E=210 k N /mm2

19. A weight of 6667 N falls through a height ‘h’ on a collar rigidly attached to the lower end of a
vertical bar 3m long and 600 mm2 in section. If the instantaneous extension is 2mm, what is the
value of ‘h’? Take E s=2 ×105 N / mm2
