intensity 100kN/m, which includes the self-weight of the beam. The beam is constructed
of three plates welded together to form the cross-section shown. The allowable bending
stress and the allowable shear stress are 100MPa and 60MPa respectively.
a) Determine the required width b of the top and bottom flanges
b) Using the calculated width, find
(i) the maximum bending stresses at a section 2m from the left support
(ii) the shear stress at a section 2m from the left support and 525mm below the top
