CENGR 3220: TIMBER & STEEL DESIGN/CENGR 520: STEEL DEIGN

Assignment # 2

Problem 1
An 10m long steel beam is simply supported at the left end and 2m from the right end. It
carries a total uniform load of 40kN/m
Given:
Beam Properties
A = 11700mm2
d = 350mm
bf = 250mm
tf = 16mm
tw = 10mm
Ix = 266 x 106mm4
Iy = 45 x 106mm4

If the beam is laterally supported throughout its length, determine the following;
a. Find the maximum bending stress (MPa).
b. Find the maximum web shear stress (MPa).
c. To strengthen the beam, 2-200mm x 10mm cover plate, one at the top
flange and the other at the bottom flange were added. What is the
resulting maximum bending stress?

Problem 2
A fixed ended beam has a span of 12m and supports a super imposed uniformly distributed
load of 20kN/m.
Properties of W 420 x 85:
A = 10930mm2
bf = 180mm
d = 420mm
Ix = 315 x 106mm4
Iy = 18 x 106mm4
tf = 18mm
tw = 11mm

Consider bending about the major x-axis, determine;

a. Calculate the maximum bending stress, (fbx).
b. Compute the maximum web shear stress in Mpa.
c. Compute the maximum horizontal shear stress in Mpa.

Problem 3
A W310 x 97 of 9m is used as a beam with adequate lateral support for the compression
flange. Steel use is A242 steel with Fy = 345.60MPa.
Properties of W 310 x 97:
w = 0.95kN/m
A = 12300mm2
d = 308mm
bf = 305mm
Ix = 222 x 106mm4
Sy = 1440 x 103 mm3
tf = 15.4mm
tw = 9.9mm

a. Determine the allowable bending stress of the beam.

b. Determine the safe concentrated load that it could support at its midspan so that it will not
exceed its allowable bending stress.
c. Determine the safe concentrated load that this could support at its midspan so that it will
not exceed its allowable shearing stress.
