TOPIC 3: FLEXURE AND SHEAR REQUIREMENTS FOR BUILT-UP MEMBERS

1. ACTUAL BENDING STRESS
fb = M/Sx
2. ACTUAL SHEAR STRESS
fv = VQ/Ib

3. SHEAR FLOW (kN/m)

4. Longitudinal Spacing of Rivets

S = RI/VQ = R/q

Where:
Sx = smallest section modulus = I/C(largest)
I = Inertia about neutral axis of built up section
Q = Statical momemt of area above section investigated = Ay
b = smallest width of contact at section investigation
Y = distance of centroid area from the NA of built up section
R = rivet shear capacity = Asfs
Ss = shear stress/rivet
As = Shear area of rivets

Problem 1
A wide flange section is built up from three pieces of 400 x 20mm plate
joined together . Determine the following if section is subjected to a maximum
shear of 2.40kN.
a. Maximum shearing stress (shear at N.A.)
b. Shear stress at junction of flange and web.
c. Average shear stress at web.
d Shear force carried by the web
e. Longitudinal force at junction of flange and web
f. Shear flow at section 100mm horizontally from one end of the two
flanges.
