TOPIC 2 : FLEXURE AND SHEAR REQUIREMENTS FOR LATERALLY-UNSUPPORTED BEAMS

I. ACTUAL BENDING STRESS: fb = M/Sx ≤ Fb

II. ALLOWABLE BENDING STRESS (Bending about major axis)
a. Tension on extreme fibers : Fb = 0.60Fy
b. Compression on extreme fibers:
(703000Cb/Fy) ; Fb = 0.60Fy
use the larger value obtained from the
equations below but not more than 0.60Fy

Fb = 83000Cb/(L(d/Af)) if compression flange is solid & approximately

rectangular in cross section and its area is not
less than that of the tension flange.

c. When L/rt Use the larger value obtained from the

equations below but not more than 0.60Fy

Fb = 83000Cb/((L(d/Af))

WHERE:
L= actual distance between cross sections braced against twist or
lateral displacement of the compression flange (mm)
rt = radius of gyration of the section comprising the compression flange
plus 13 of the compression web area taken about the axis in the
plane of the web.

A = Af + 13(12 Aweb) =bftf + 16 Aweb

Af = area of the compression flange = bf tf

Cb = bending coefficient = 1.0 for cantilever beams
= 1.0 when the bending moment at any point
within the unbraced length is larger than that
at both ends

M1 = smaller moment at the end of the unbraced length

M2 = larger moment at the end of the unbraced length
M1/M2 = (+) if member bends in reverse or double curvature
M1/M2 = (-) if member bends in single curvature

III. SHEAR REQUIREMENT FOR ROLLED SHAPES:

Actual shear stress : fv = V/dtw
Allowable shear stress : Fv = 0.40Fy
