Allowable Shearing -

Stress
Shear Strength

Where:
– horizontal shearing stress at point of interest.
V – vertical shear force at the section under consideration.
Q – first moment (Moment of Area), about the neutral axis, of the
area of the cross section between the point of interest and the top
or bottom of the cross section .
I – moment of inertia about the neutral axis.
b – width of the cross section at the point of interest.
Bending and Shear in Beams
A W24x94 beam is subjected to a load as shown in the figure.
Properties of W Section. Neglect weight of beam.

tf = 22.15 mm

Compute the ff:

a. Bending stress

tw – thickness of web , mm
a – clear distance between transverse (web)stiffeners,

Web Stiffeners
• Intermediate stiffeners are required the ratio
exceed 260.
Spacing

Stiffeners are secondary
plates or sections which
are attached to beam webs
or flanges to stiffen them
against out of plane
deformations.
Shear in Beams

A steel beam has the following properties:

Overall depth = 1000 mm
Flange width = 450 mm
Flange thickness = 13.0 mm
Web thickness = 12.0 mm
The beam is simply supported over a length of 5 meters and is
provided with transverse stiffeners . Analyze the beam based
on shear only using provision on NSCP 2001. Use Fy = 250 MPa.
Determine the allowable shear stress if the web stiffeners is
spaced at:
a. 250 mm
b. 500 mm
c. 1000 mm
d. 1500 mm
