Introduction
My business idea is to collaborate with University of Maryland University’s (UMUC)

Office of Student Accounts (OSA). My business plan initiative is to work with the Office of

Student Accounts departments to redesign their new hire training program. My business idea will

include changing the current face-to-face training to incorporate a more efficient online training.

Additionally, my business idea will also include streamlining the new hire training programs

across the department. Establishing a more streamline process and redesigning the Office of

Students new hire training program will make the new hire process more efficient, consistent and

less time consuming in a number of ways that affect current and prospective employees of the

department.

The Office of Student Accounts continues to grow and expand its department to

accommodate their rising workload. As the department continues to expand new positions are

becoming available, which allows external candidates the opportunity to be considered for

employment. Furthermore, new hire employee must be effectively trained and equipped to

perform all required duties. The current Office of Student Accounts new hire training program

consist of a three week long shadowing sessions. These sessions allow new hires to get a better

understanding of every unit’s duties under Student Accounts. These face-to-face sessions are

extremely long and draining. They are time consuming for current employees, who are assigned

to each session, as well as the new hire employees.

Stakeholders

The Office of Student Accounts consist of a number of different departments that work

together in many ways. These departments consist of directors and full-time employees that run

the day-to-day operations. I have proposed my business idea to a few managers and employees in

four different departments under the Office of Student Accounts umbrella. I was able to reach

out to my current director as well as the Vice President of Quality Assurance. The responses

were very open and positive. The ultimate discussion and possible approval would be with the

Associate Vice President of the department

Strengths

A major strength of the current new hire training process is their current foundation. The

training program has a great start and strong framework. The focus is to assure new hires grasp a

good understanding of the business processes of each department by providing face-to-face

training. My business idea will encourage a process that is more effective and propose new,

innovative methods for providing training to new hires in the Office of Student. Furthermore,

streamlining online training across the department enables a more consistent and efficient

process for new hires and current employees.

Weaknesses

The Office of Student Accounts weaknesses in their new hire training program is their

lack of computer-based training and lack of frequent training. The current new hire training is

extensive and makes it difficult for new hires to retain the given information. Since the useful

technologies and space provided, funding the proposed business idea is not an issue.

Opportunities

Collaborating with the Office of Student Accounts redesign their new hire training

process to included computer-based training opens many opportunities. My business idea would

shrink the amount of time new hires must do shadow training. Incorporating a computer-based

training will allow more hands on training. Current employees, who are assigned to do shadow

training, are able to focus more on their daily duties. Additionally, streamlining the training

process, making new hire training consistent throughout the department offers a substantial
