How to Ping a Port with a Laptop

A crossover cable will be required to connect laptop to the port on the server you are testing

Press Start and select Control Panel

Select Network and Sharing Center

Select Change Adapter Settings


Right click Local Area Connection and select Properties

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 then click Properties


Select “Use Following IP Address”
Enter IP address of port you are trying to ping but set last set 1-20 numbers off.
Example: You are trying to ping 10.50.61.64
Set you address to 10.50.61.65 or 10.50.61.67 (usually 1-2 off is best)
If a blade system, you may need to set 20 off.

Click OK to save settings

Connect Crossover cable to port on laptop and to port on server you are testing.

Press Start
Select All Programs
Select Accessories

Select Command Prompt

Type ping <space> and address you want to ping


Press “Enter”
If you have no success you will see Request Timed Out with 100% loss.
Check connection and cable and retry.
Change laptop settings and retry.

If you have success you will see Reply with 0% loss.
