Twas the night before Emperor's Day, every month of the year,
and he fought all alone, Because of brave guardsmen
in a four foot deep trench like the one standing here.
lined with plasteel and stone.
A tear came to my eye
I was traveling the warp for those who stood alone,
with gifts for the land, on a cold Emperor's Day Eve
when I saw this lone guardsman on a planet far from home.
making his brave stand.
Their great sacrifices
I looked all about, I could never betray
I looked near and far, So I drew my burning sword
no Chimera, no Basilisk, to join in the fray
nor Techpriest or Commissar.
The soldier did turn
No Sergeant yelled orders and I heard a rough voice.
to this guardsman - no backing "My Emperor, rest easy,
to fight this ridge full of xenos this death is my choice;
formed from pure evil, attacking.
I fight for a freedom
His armor in tatters, that may never be found,
his eyes nearly blind, but not ever shall I waver
A sobering truth upon Your sacred ground
raced through my mind.
Then the Guardsman turned
His position was doomed, to face the incursions
was my only thought of the foul xenos and
and this soldier's brave stand their unholy perversions
would all be for naught.
I kept watch for hours,
The guardsman stared unblinking, until the night was still
silent and alone, and the guardsman lay broken
his lasrifle at the ready on the bloody red hill.
against his shoulder bone.
I could not just leave
His gaze was so calm on that cold grim dark night,
in the face of calamity, this guardian of honor
the perfect picture of so willing to fight.
a guardsman of humanity.
Who was this brave hero And as the guardsman lay dying,
whose position I'd spied, his soul strong and pure,
warring against he cried, "Ave Imperator!
this unstoppable tide? It's Emperor's Day! This world is secure
I now knew that all humans
I would see this night, I knelt before the fallen,
owed their lives to these guardsmen A great victory he'd won.
who were willing to fight. "Happy Emperor's Day my guardsman,
Soon all round the galaxy rest in peace, my son."
