In the first chapter of Wuthering Heights we come across these two different and possibly similar

characters.

In the first place we have Lockwood who is a traveler through Yorkshire, a curious and insistent
man. As soon as Lockwood arrives at Heathcliff’s manor he finds this cold and repulsive world. The
rough-looking man and the young girl who responds rudly as well as the manor’s name. Wuthering
Heights are all parts of Heathcliff’s cold personality and this seems to predict the relationship between
them.

Mr. Heathcliff is ‘’a surly , dark man’’ who doesn’t trust strangers and wants to get rid of Lockwood
by trying to scare him with the dogs. This repulsive attitude migh be something that deffinetly him and
his relation to the oter world in general. So, for him, Lockwood is just another stranger who had to
leave. Precisely this mysterious cold attitude attracts Lockwood more and makes him eager to pay him
another visit.

However, they both tend to sick isolation in one way or another. Lockwood by coming to the lonely
Thrushcross Grage and Heathcliff who treats his visitor like an intruder and doesn’t show him the
apropiate respect.

Finaly there is nothing normal about their relationship as a boust and a guest. Heathcliff’s
indifference on his guest’s fate as he leaves him to go back to Thrushcross Grage uneguided though a
blizzard makes Lockwood furious and ‘’cursing the inhabitants’’.
